Racial Equity Workshops for Trainers & Facilitators

Are you working to address racial inequities through training, facilitation and coaching or do you have shared interest in developing those skills? In our efforts to support development of inclusive institutional cultures, policies and practices across this region, we are now looking for experienced trainers and facilitators who want to learn how to offer Racial Equity Workshops and adapt this Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance's (LEDA) model for use in our region.

In order to follow the model of LEDA's work, we are particularly interested in inviting people of color who have these skills and want to bring racial equity into their work, so they can partner with white allies to practice presenting material to the public together. Moving Forward

In the last few months, many have shared with the Equity Alliance that they are relieved this effort -- to help organizations identify and eliminate systematic, particularly racial, inequities -- started earlier last year and people have also been sharing their experiences with us in their encounters with race-based hate speech and attacks.

As many recent speakers visiting the north coast have noted, even though explicit racism in most of its forms was outlawed by the 1960s, resultant poor health and socioeconomic outcomes did not markedly change – due to the continued significant influence of racial biases built into our institutions and societal structures, even though they intend to operate with no bias or racism. John Dovidio, a leading researcher on the psychology of explicit and implicit bias, explains this phenomena in his publication, The Nature of Contemporary Prejudice: Insights from Aversive Racism.

Get Involved

What can we do as individuals to engage our with our communities and build understanding of the 'other'? We and other partners will offer more Racial Equity Workshops to learn these skills in April and June (more details will be sent in mid-March). Othering & Belonging Conference - April 30 - May 2, 2017

The Haas Institute is convening its second Othering and Belonging Conference in the spring of 2017 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Othering and Belonging Conference aims to bring together people from a wide spectrum of disciplines and backgrounds to examine the issues of Othering, with the goal of crafting transformative solutions to promote inclusivity and Belonging.
