Altar Guild Needs New Members!
The Altar Guild is responsible for the important task of caring for the altar, vestments, vessels, and altar linens of the parish. Altar Guild members prepare the sanctuary for services and clean up afterwards. The members work closely with the         c lergy to make sure that everything that happens at the altar is "just right."
The Altar Guild prepares not only for Sunday services, but also for those special occasions that are so meaningful to all of us, and that are so important to "make perfect," so that worship becomes both beautiful and seamless to the congregation.
That's a formidable task, given the high importance of the Holy Eucharist in the Episcopal Church. It's also a fun ministry, and an enlightening one. Every little detail has both a theological, an historical, and a parish significance. Nothing is done lightly or frivolously.
We need people to join this important ministry. You will not need to work alone, or every single Sunday, but you will learn a lot about the church! The duties are done in groups, rotated regularly.
Please join this wonderful ministry! If you are interested, please contact the church office at 513.861.4437 or  [email protected]

Flunking Chinese

When I was in graduate school, I flunked Chinese-twice. That pretty much put an end to my goal of earning a Ph.D. in East Asian History. This would not have been so embarrassing except that my ancestry is Chinese. I should at least have a feel for this language, if not a basic knowledge or even a genetic predisposition.

I do know a few basic words and sentences, like "How are you?" and the sentence my mother taught me: "Pick up your socks." These can be useful in a few situations. But I had not the motivation to learn the language, despite "being" Chinese.  Being Chinese did not give me a leg up, or any extra credit, in language class.

I think of this when I hear the excuses that people give for coasting along on faith: "We have Abraham for our ancestor!" "We're Christians!" Being a "native Christian" does not necessarily confer on us any special knowledge that grows as we grow. "Being Christian" is a lifelong process of learning to love and serve God and one another. A three-year-old learns this differently from a thirty-year-old.

As we begin this new program year at Calvary, I would like to encourage you to participate in the various Christian formation classes that help us to grow up spiritually, just as we grow up physically. As we grow older, we deserve a deeper, more intimate knowledge and experience of God and what it means to be Christian than what we learned in kindergarten. Lots of exciting programs for children, youth, and adults are available this year, thanks to dedicated volunteers who work to make Calvary a vibrant learning community. And if you feel like you need an entertaining beginner's course, check out "Inside the Episcopal Mind," the inquirer's class which begins this Sunday at 9:00am. Unlike my experience with Chinese class, you'll never flunk it!

RECORDING SESSION
Last Saturday the chancel and nave of  Calvary Church  became an on-location studio as members of the  Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble  recorded new choral anthems being released soon by the historic publisher, HW Gray--part of the  Jubilate Music Group .  Beginning earlier this year, Howard accepted the position as Editor of this catalogue.  Since the mid-1990s, HW Gray has been one of the publishers of his choral music. Prayer
G rant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

See you at Church!
