Calvary Chimes
Week of Sunday, May 14, 2017

The LAST Profile gathering  will take place on Sunday, May 21. 2 017 at 12:00 noon in Hannaford Hall. Food will be served and child care will be available.

Wanted: Persons to serve  on Calvary's Search Committee. This committee is responsible for posting the parish's portfolio on the Episcopal Church's website, then to receive candidate names, winnow the list of candidates, conduct interviews, and finally submit a single name to the Vestry for approval. The time commitment will vary, depending on the task, and the committee may convene for anywhere from six months to a year. Nomination forms are on the stage in Hannaford Hall, as is the box for submitting your application. If you have questions about the committee, please see Joanna.

Devin Rodgers,
who has been studying at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, June 3 at 11:00 am. Since Calvary is his supporting parish, I hope you will all attend his ordination to support and applaud this transformational time in his life and ministry. He will preach at Calvary on Sunday, June 4-his first sermon as a member of the clergy.

The Vestry and Profile committee are focused on the search for a new rector.  To keep members of the parish up to date we would like to share our progress:
To this point they (we) have
  • Met with diocesan representatives on a number of occasions
  • Analyzed the data from the Parish Survey
  • Chosen a format for the profile
  • Written the outline for each of the sections of the Profile
  • Selected possible photos to be used in the profile
  • Retained an editor and graphic designer to compile the profile
  • The profile committee plans to share the profile with the parish on May 21.
Please consider giving a gift of Memorial Altar Flowers to honor your loved ones on Sunday. Contact Phyllis Reid to make the arrangements 321-4625.

Sleepless Bird

I woke up early this morning-very early. It is three o'clock and I can't sleep. Outside, a bird sings.  Don't birds sleep at night? Maybe she can't sleep either.

I am used to sleepless nights, but that does not mean I always like them. I am not a night owl. Nights are for sleeping.

But God does not always keep perfect time with us according to our schedule. Nor, as it turns out, do the birds. This particular bird will sing in the dark, as if to challenge the morning. She refuses to abide by the rule-keep quiet at night. It's time to sleep, not to sing.

But this quiet time is a gift, sometimes unbidden---just like the Holy Spirit, who also often comes unbidden at this hour. This is a time when the mind wanders freely without being reined in by-me, or at least by my mental treadmill that in the daytime helps me to get things done but also crowds out the song of the Spirit. Lying sleepless at night, I can hear this song.

So I go with Sleepless Bird.  She sings to welcome the morning, whenever it will come-and to welcome the Holy Spirit, whenever she will come. Sometimes "nighttime" is just overrated.

 -  Howard Helvey

  Howard showing signs of anxiety

For the final Choir rehearsal last week of the season, we celebrated with a brief review of Sunday's music, a party, and a time of cleaning the choir library and vesting room.  What could be more fun!?  My thanks to Edy Dreith for continuing to help organize things this week, and for providing the emotional strength I needed in order to throw away (recycle) early versions of my Psalm antiphons that we will likely never use again.
