Our theology is an art form, not a law book.
We belong before we believe.
We do not give simple answers to complex questions.

Inside the Episcopal Mind will take you through a three-part audio-visual excursion into the Episcopal mind and spirit, to find out what it means to be an Episcopalian. Some of the answers may surprise you!

September 25
Can You Believe Anything You Want and Be an Episcopalian?
(We're not as wishy-washy as you may think)

October 2
Are There Any Episcopalians in Heaven?
(Or, how do you get saved in the Episcopal Church?)

This class, led by interim rector Joanna Leiserson, is designed for anyone who wants an entertaining look at how and why we do church the way we do. It will be helpful for newcomers, inquirers, persons interested in being baptized or confirmed, and anyone interested in what one theologian calls "our peculiar way of church." Attendees will also learn the foundational principles of the Episcopal Church, which will be important as the congregation begins to explore Calvary's identity and to discern its goals in preparation for the calling of a new rector.

  From the Interim Rector:

Happy New Year!
Of course I know that the year begins on the totally random date of January 1, though Chinese New Year is sometime around the first full moon after January, and the Church's new year begins this year on November 27, which is the first Sunday of Advent.
But everybody knows that the real new year begins now. School is beginning, church fall programming year begins, and we even have fireworks to mark the new year-the Labor Day fireworks, which I hear is even bigger than the fireworks show on the Fourth of July. The spectacular fireworks show seems to kick off a brand new year, appropriately on Labor Day weekend, the holiday in which we celebrate labor by not doing it.
At Calvary, we have a lot of special events planned this year. Besides Sunday services and classes, there will be fun events especially for children, youth, young adults, and the intergenerational clans. This month marks a new beginning for the church year, in terms of our programs.
God is always making new beginnings for us. In the coming year, we will try new things, and some may succeed and some may not. But if we stumble, we can pick ourselves up and start again. God likes that. New beginnings are always risky, but necessary for us to grow and flourish. Jesus does not ask us to be content with "the way things are." He himself was the world's New Beginning, ushering in the Kingdom of God with the godly values of compassion, mercy, forgiveness, and servanthood. When we keep our eyes focused on the path that Jesus set for us, we open ourselves up to changing "the way things are" so that we can always reflect those values, and we open ourselves up to New Beginnings, every single day.
So, as summer starts to come to a close, and school begins, and work schedules adapt, and the Labor Day fireworks wake us up to the beginning of fall, Happy New Year!

ORGAN VIDEO
Take a few minutes to enjoy Dr.  Yun Kim 's dynamite performance at Calvary Church of the Finale from Widor's 6th Organ Symphony, with audio and video beautifully produced by  Michael Hughes . We were thrilled to have Yun as guest organist on the Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble concert last October (at which this video was taken), and we welcome her back again in a few weeks as organist for CFE's performance of the Duruflé Requiem, Sunday, October 23, 7 PM!

Prayer
G rant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

See you at Church!
