Calvary Chimes
Week of Sunday, May 28, 2017

Kitty Clark  has been a faithful member of Calvary Church for many years. During her time here, she has taught, preached, and attended both the 8:00 and the 10:30 services. In June, Kitty will begin a new chapter in her life, moving to Colorado to live near family members, as her son John will be moving away from Cincinnati. This Sunday, May 28, will be her last Sunday at Calvary. Having heard that she preaches excellent sermons, I have asked her to preach on this last Sunday, and she has agreed. Kitty will be the preacher at 8:00 and at 10:30. I hope you can come and say goodbye to Kitty, and wish her Godspeed as she moves on.

Wanted: Persons to serve  on Calvary's Search Committee. This committee is responsible for posting the parish's portfolio on the Episcopal Church's website, then to receive candidate names, winnow the list of candidates, conduct interviews, and finally submit a single name to the Vestry for approval. Perks! Possible travel package (for on-site interviews) and close community building. The time commitment will vary, depending on the task, and the committee may convene for anywhere from six months to a year. Nomination forms are on the stage in Hannaford Hall, as is the box for submitting your application. If you have questions about the committee, please see Joanna.

Devin Rodgers,  who has been studying at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, June 3 at 11:00 am. Since Calvary is his supporting parish, I hope you will all attend his ordination to support and applaud this transformational time in his life and ministry. He will preach at Calvary on Sunday, June 4-his first sermon as a member of the clergy.

Calvary has just formed the Calvary Kitchen Crewe, coordinated by Edy Dreith, which will be responsible for small hospitality gatherings in the church. Comprised of a team of members who will work in the kitchen, the Crewe is available upon request for events such as small receptions and church events. However, they are not a catering service for large gatherings. For some events, donation baskets for goodwill offerings will be put on tables to help defer the cost of the food. If you have a request or question about this new ministry, please contact Edy.

From the soon to be Deacon

Dear Calvary,

After three years of seminary, lots of classes, many many term papers, the General Ordination Exams, interviews and prayers, I am a graduate of Church Divinity School of the Pacific and a candidate for ordination!

Next week, as you probably have read in the Chimes, I will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at Christ Church Cathedral. I cannot wait, and I want you all to know that I am incredibly grateful for all of the prayers and support that members of Calvary have given me over the past several years.  I could not have done this without you. Thank you!

Following ordination, Philippe and I will be spending some time relaxing and perhaps taking a few weekends trips around California. On July 2nd, I will be starting my first call at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco. I will be working with the Rev. Paul Fromberg and learning from the good people of St. Gregory's. The parish is well known for its liturgical exploration and their artistic and musical approach to worship. I believe it will be a great fit for me, and I am incredibly excited. If you ever find yourself in the Bay Area, be sure to come visit!

I look forward to worshipping with you on June 4th. As it is Pentecost, we will be remembering the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. I am excited to see all of the new life and changes occurring at Calvary. I could not think of a more appropriate commemoration or church to serve my first Sunday as ordained clergy. What a blessing!

Be assured of my continued prayers.

In Christ's Peace,

Devin Rodgers

High School Vocal Showcase/Fundraiser
Friday, June 2, 7 PM
Hannaford Hall

As many of you know, the Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble this summer is sponsoring the Miami Choral and Voice Institute in Coral Gables, Florida.  This inter-generational event will bring together student, early-career, and professional singers and conductors in a week-long program of study, performance, masterclasses, and lectures.  In early April, we welcomed the Winton Woods High School Varsity Ensemble to Calvary, and a few of their students will be participating in the Miami Institute.  You are invited to come hear this short recital featuring the participants, along with a few other students, prior to the trip.

The recital is free of charge, and all are welcome to attend.  A free-will offering will be collected.  Funds raised will help provide money for the students' misc. expenses (food and transportation) during the institute week.

Family Worship Service

Music that Makes Community is a wonderful opportunity mentioned in greater detail in the main box of this Chimes. It is an event that will be held June 28-30 at Calvary Church and is for anyone who would like to learn about leading more informal music opportunities like our own 9:30 service.  This is for anyone with an interest in music regardless of your experience level.  If you would like more information, please contact Jane Gerdsen using the link at the top of the Chimes.

We've really noticed a big change in the time we are able to start the Family Worship service each Sunday.  Thank you to those of you who have taken on a Sunday to get the worship duties lined up and ready to go before 9:30! If you are interested in helping in this way  or for more information please contact Kelsey at (614)787-1720 or [email protected]

There is a new coffee hour sign up sheet for the next couple of months posted by the kitchen! We have really enjoyed the good food to go with good conversation after the service.

Please come and talk to any of the worship team members if you have any ideas for our community or would like to join the team.
