CU music alumnus performs for Pope Francis

Nilson Galvao Jr., a 2007 alumnus of the CU School of Music, conducted a Brazilian youth orchestra in a private concert for Pope Francis at the Vatican in Italy on Oct.31.

The children were members of The Child Citizen Orchestra, a social project to reach out to children who live in the Coque community, one of the most violent neighborhoods in Recife, Brazil. Galvao explained that the project has three orchestras, one of which had the opportunity to perform at the Vatican.

Galvao conducted the orchestra in the performance of works by Bach, Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky.  The group later performed for the prime minister of Portugal in Lisbon.

Galvao is the musical coordinator and conductor of the orchestra.

CU percussionists perform at national conference

The CU Chamber Percussion Group performed at the 2014 Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Indianapolis, Ind. in November. CU was one of 11 collegiate ensembles from across the nation to participate in the event. This marked the first time that a percussion ensemble from CU had performed at this annual event. PASIC is the largest percussion event in the world featuring over 120 concerts, clinics, master classes, labs, workshops, panels and presentations. The event is held in different cities each year across the United States.

Members of the ensemble included music majors Seth Hayes, Cory Barnes, Jordan Hines, John McGhee and Michael Mather.

Dr. Chad Floyd, associate professor of music, recently published a new work for snare drum and percussion ensemble, Triptych Boom. The piece was released by Tapspace Publications during the 2014 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. A video of the debut performance of the piece from this past fall by Floyd and the CU Chamber Percussion Group was on display throughout the convention.
