First annual Chamber Music Camp big success

On June 7-9, the Campbellsville University School of Music welcomed 22 high school students to its first annual Chamber Music Summer Camp.

The camp was designed to give developing musicians an opportunity to learn about and perform chamber music - duets, trios, quartets and even octets. Students also had opportunity to interact with CU School of Music faculty, alumni and current students while participating in a wide variety of musical enrichment, including master classes and clinics on performance skills, lessons in music theory, music history, class piano and jazz improvisation. Camp participants also had a small composition project that they performed on the final concert, and an opportunity to perform music on the angklung, a traditional Indonesian instrument.

Corey Bonds, assistant director of bands, and Dr. Bill Budai, associate professor of piano, worked together coordinating the summer camp experience.

"The benefits of performing in these types of ensembles are several layers deep. Most importantly, the students develop a confidence in performance independence, while still maintaining a dependence in ensemble structure. In other words, they had to learn and perform their part because no one else had it."

"This is different than most large ensemble performances, where, typically, many voices or instruments are singing or playing the same musical part. Also, this differs from solo performance because there must be a concern for the "ensemble structure", or rather, how the individual part fits into the bigger picture of the "ensemble sound", requiring an even higher mastery of technical and rhythmic understanding," said Bonds.

The 22 camp participants came from all over central Kentucky including Albany, Bardstown, Bowling Green, Campbellsville, Edmonton, Gamaliel, Glasgow, Lebanon, Leitchfield, Paducah, Scottsville, Somerset, Sonora, Springfield, Williamstown and Willisburg.

The campers presented their culminating concert on the evening of June 9 in The Gheens Recital Hall in the Gosser Fine Arts Center on Campbellsville University's main campus.

The 2016 CU Chamber Music Summer Camp is tentatively scheduled for June 5-7, 2016.

Steel Appeal heats up Campbellsville this summer

Steel Appeal, the newly-formed community steel drum ensemble, rehearses in the Gosser Fine Arts Center instrumental room.

Steel Appeal, a new steel band academy, was formed this summer in an effort to offer an exciting new musical opportunity to community members in and around Campbellsville. The academy is open to anyone third grade and up and no musical experience is required to join. There are four bands to accommodate all ages and experience levels:

  • Junior Band (3rd through 5th grade)
  • Blastoff Band (6th grade and up, beginning level)
  • Silver Stars (6th grade and up, intermediate level)
  • Elite Band (6th grade and up, experienced level)

Dr. Chad Floyd, associate professor of percussion and director of the group, is excited about the opportunity this allows for the community. "The interest for this group has been amazing so far. We currently have 43 members in the band and we are only two weeks into the rehearsals. We have people from all backgrounds participating: youngsters with no experience, middle and high school students who play wind instruments, adults with no musical training, and even music professionals, some more than two hours away!"

Steel Appeal rehearses every Thursday night throughout the summer. Floyd's goal is to continue the band into the fall and potentially year round, depending on the interest level. There are small monthly fees to participate. The first performances are during the 4th of July Celebration in Campbellsville. The band will perform at 8 a.m. at the Campbellsville Christian Church community breakfast and then later at 5:30 p.m. in Miller Park before the fireworks.
