IFDS World Championships

Team Canada

 January 2012

Measurement is complete and racing is scheduled to start tomorrow at the 2012 IFDS Worlds in Charlotte Harbor, Florida. The past few days have been busy with a flurry of polishing, measuring & practice racing in very light air. Today, the forecast called for very light winds in the 3-5 kt range.

There is significant Canadian presence at this event with sailors and coaches from BC, SK, MB, ON, QC and NS. Some athletes are vying for 2012 Paralympic selection while others are gaining experience towards provincial selection for the Canada Games Team.

Paralympic Gold medallist, Paul Tingley is focused on a podium finish in the 2.4mR class. Tingley says "The talent runs deep at this event and, in the 2.4 mR fleet, there are 10 potential World Champions." Tingley, having already secured his 2012 Paralympic spot, will be fighting hard to earn the 2012 World Championship crown. SUN Article - Tingley.

In the Sonar, Bruce Millar, Logan Campbell and Scott Lutes are testing their boat speed, and looking to break through to podium performance in a very tough fleet. Both Canadian team hopefuls, John McRoberts and Stacie Louttit are battling with Ken Kelly and Brenda Hopkin for the Paralympic berth in the SKUD. Both teams have been training full time for months here in Florida.

The weather outlook for the next few days is pretty light but Wednesday there is a little more wind forecast, so all are keeping fingers crossed that wind patterns will improve.
