Canarsie Beach Cleanup

Saturday July 11 at 9 a.m.

Canarsie Beach, BK

Join the National Park Service, and NYC H2O for a volunteer beach cleanup at Canarsie Beach, Brooklyn!

We will begin the cleanup at low-tide and see the shell fish that the Lenape native Americans, mistakenly identified as the "Canarsee" tribe, once used for to make wampum, whilst keeping an eye out for Captain Kidd's treasure. Legend has it that he buried it on Canarsie Beach as well as on Gardiner's Island. We will also explain the history that shaped the pier and the unrealized plans to develop Jamaica Bay into the major port for NYC.

The cleanup will run from 9am to 12pm. Optional bus transportation to Carnarsie Beach will be provided from Union Square in Manhattan (space is limited) - the bus will depart at 9am and will return to Union Square after the cleanup.

Registration is required - please sign up here.
