Canvases for Kids: One Hundred Boards, One Hundred Artists, One Mural

The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes in Corning opened its doors last September to more than 120 volunteer artists of all ages. Each artist designed one 4x4 inch square canvas board, offering an anonymous message of hope, encouragement, and compassion to the children and families utilizing CareFirst's grief counseling services. The squares were installed as a mural mosaic at CareFirst, connecting many voices as one. This project was supported by a grant from the Southern Tier Regional Volunteer Center.

Corning Area Youth Center Collaborative Mural

CareFirst, in collaboration with the Corning Area Youth Center and artist Mavin Staub Ambrose,  offered a program using art to focus on the emotional impact of grief on local youth. With the guidance of CareFirst counselors, ten youth center participants, aged 9-17, worked together to identify symbols of the grieving process and create a collaborative art piece representing their experiences. They painted the mural at the CareFirst Administrative Office. Alongside the mural, a community chalk wall will be installed, providing grieving families a space for memorialization as they honor and remember their loved ones. This project was supported by the Raising Dough for Kids Campaign.
