Teacher Retirement Hot Topic under Gold Dome Today

A PAGE-opposed bill severely limiting cost of living adjustments for Georgia educators who became TRS members after 1993 was introduced today in the House. HB 903, by Rep. Howard Maxell (R-Dallas), seeks to limit Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA's) for any educator who became a Teachers Retirement System (TRS) member on or after July 1, 1993, unless the annual required employer contribution for the preceding fiscal year was less than $150 million and the employee contribution rate is established by the TRS board at 6 percent. Review the PAGE Action Alert on HB 903 and contact your legislator.

The Senate Retirement Committee also considered TRS-related legislation today. SB 293, sponsored by Senate Retirement Chair Ellis Black (R-Valdosta) is a fiscal bill that requires the employer of a TRS retiree to pay the employer and employee contribution rates for that employee. Retirees will continue to receive their retirement benefit but will not accrue additional service credit. The bill passed the committee unanimously and moves on to the Senate Rules Committee for consideration on the Senate floor.
