Car Jacking Arrest Thursday Night
Community Safety Meeting May 17
Dear Neighbor,

As you may have seen on the news, a carjacking incident that began at 600 W. Chicago ended with a successful arrest in the 1400 block of Lake Shore Drive.

But in the last two weeks, we have experienced:

  • A stabbing on Webster on Tuesday, April 10
  • A carjacking spree on Sunday, April 22nd
  • An armed robbery on Wednesday, April 25
  • This carjacking spree on Thursday, April 26

We are grateful for the excellent police work in apprehending this offender and seizing his weapon.

Our 18th District has received thirty new officers and the Mayor has formed a Carjacking Task Force. But more is needed, as we have discussed in earlier newsletters , inadequate laws and lax handling of repeat offenders are emboldening robbers and carjackers to commit these brazen crimes.

In this latest case, an undercover police office was carjacked in the 600 block of West Chicago Ave. The offender drove the vehicle to Oak and Rush, attempted to carjack another car and shot a citizen in the arm. The offender then carjacked another vehicle and drove to North Lake Shore Drive, where he attempted to carjack a third vehicle unsuccessfully, shooting and grazing a citizen. Police tracked the offender to the 1400 block of North Lake Shore Drive and arrested him in a condo building lobby, seizing a semi-automatic weapon.

In the near future we are holding a Community Public Safety forum to seek answers and solutions to deal with this unacceptable level of crime. I hope you can join us.
