See what's happening at Cardinal Elementary
January 6, 2017

Happy Friday,
I want to welcome your family back to school after winter break. It was so great to see our students on Tuesday. They returned to school so eager to see their friends and teachers and were ready to learn. Many staff members commented on how great our students were as they jumped back into the school routine.

Many of our students were able to complete the winter reading challenge. Thank you for supporting and encouraging your child to complete the reading. With the holidays being so busy, this reading challenge is definitely harder to complete. Spending time with friends and family often distracts us. Regardless we had many students read for the 10 days. Their celebration will take place next week.

Report cards are available today. Please log into Powerschool to review your child's report card and even have a conversation with him/her about the progress over the course of the semester.  Click here to see those students who had perfect attendance for Quarter 2.  See below for a list of 4th and 5th grade students who made the A/B Honor Roll.

Finally, I would like to celebrate our students who have clipped up to Red throughout the week. I am so proud of their amazing behavior choices. This week we celebrate these students:
Chloe Chandler
Sofia Acevedo Hernaiz
Amelia Rule
Tryston Patrick
Sammi Skaggs
Allison Baker
Nevaeh Castetter
Anica Smajevic
Gavin Arnold

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mr. Gianfagna

High Ability Identification for 2017-2018

Identification for High Ability programming for the next school year will begin later this month and be concluded by Spring Break. In 1st grade, students who met specific criteria on the CogAT administered in November, will proceed further in the identification process and parent permission will be required for further assessment which will occur in February. Results of the CogAT are available from the school counselor, if requested. Identification of 5th grade students for middle school placements will begin in February and parent permission will be required for Language Arts assessments. All 5th grade students will participate in math placement assessments. A parent whose child has not been recommended for the assessment process but has evidence of strong, high ability qualities/performance, should contact the school principal to discuss the appropriateness of assessment. Additional questions about the High Ability program can be directed to Julie Van Liew, Coordinator of Curriculum and Special Programs at 852-5726.

Counselor's Corner

The character trait for the month of January is Integrity. Integrity means doing what you are supposed to do even when no one is looking. Being trustworthy is an aspect of integrity.   If you want others to trust you, you need to show this with your words and actions.   To reinforce January's trait of Integrity, you could discuss with your child that telling the truth can sometimes be difficult, but trying to regain trust after telling a lie is even harder. If you tell the truth, you only get in trouble for your bad choice. If you lie, you get in trouble for your bad choice and for lying. Which would you rather do?

Resource Bags
Have you recently had a death in the family? Do you want to learn more about ADD/ADHD? Resource bags are now available to Cardinal families who want to learn more about the topics listed above. The bags consist of parenting books, activity books, story books, and games along with tips sheets for parents. If you would like to check out one of the bags for one week, please contact Krissi Miller, School Counselor, at 852-1036 ext. 1218.
