Principal's Message

Happy Friday!

I cannot believe it is December and we are nearly half way through the school year. With two weeks left before winter break, Cardinal will be a busy place. I want to thank all of our students who performed in the Talent Show last night. The students did an amazing job showing off their skills. We had singers, dancers, and musicians. I also want to thank those who came to support these students. It takes a lot of courage to perform on a stage like this.

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students have been taking Acuity, which is an assessment that can inform the teachers how well students are doing on the grade level standards in math and English/Language Arts. All students will be taking the Dibels assessment next week as well. This assessment informs teachers how well students are progressing in their reading ability. If you have any questions about these two assessments, please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher.

The 3rd and 4th grade students have their music programs on December 13, and the Orff Ensemble has its music performances on December 8. In the season of giving, the PSG will have the Santa Shop open next week for students to purchase items for friends and family. If you can assist in the Shop, please sign up by clicking on this link   www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054aaaab29a3fa7-cardinal10 . Our students will also enjoy their winter parties on December 16. So much fun is still to be had.

Finally, I would like to celebrate our students who have clipped up to Red throughout the week. I am so proud of their amazing behavior choices. This week we celebrate these students:

Rebecca Otto
Sofia Wren
Sammie Schrader
Adalyn Vail
Sean Warman
Claire Sumner

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mr. Gianfagna

A message from our music teacher:

3rd and 4th grade families: The 3rd/Smith and 4th grade music performances are coming up! 3rd grade and Mrs. Smith's class will have their performance on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:30 pm. 4th grade will have their performance on Tuesday, December 13th at 7:30 pm. Both performances are themed around the winter holidays. Please have your student arrive 15 minutes before their performance begins. Attire is whatever your family wears during the holiday season. Please note: there will be movement in both performances so please stray away from super formal clothing or high heels. Both performances take place in the Delaware Trail Gym. See you there!

Notes from the Nurse

*As colder weather approaches, please send your student to school with the appropriate cold weather gear. Coats, hats, gloves, and scarves will be needed -- especially at recess! Corporation policy states that a "feels like temp of 10 degrees" is the threshold for determining outside recess vs. indoor recess.

*Cold and flu season is BACK! Encourage your student to wash their hands frequently and to cough and sneeze into elbows. Please keep your student home when they have a fever >100 or exhibit symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea to help prevent the spread of these common viruses. They can return to school only after being fever free or symptom free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of medications.

*Please remember that ALL over the counter medications brought to school, including cough drops, must be accompanied by a completed OTC form, which can be located on our school website under the Clinic tab.

*Vision Follow ups - Parents of 1st, 3rd, and 5th graders, If your student did not pass his/her vision screen at school this fall and you haven't followed up with a thorough eye exam, please do so as soon as possible. Winter break is a great time to schedule those appointments without having to miss school! Students who cannot see adequately cannot learn adequately! If you need assistance with making an appointment or with resources, please contact your school nurse or counselor, as there are several programs to assist those who qualify.

Thank you for helping keep our students healthy!

Counselor's Corner

Character: Our character trait for November and December is COMPASSION: being kind to others. During classroom guidance lessons, we frequently talk about the importance of thinking of others. If we were the only one in our world, we could just think about what we want and be a "just me" person! However, since we-staff, students, and parents-are part of a larger school community, it doesn't work to be "just us" people. Compassion means we are putting ourselves in others' shoes and trying to understand what they are feeling, then doing something kind to help. During the week, make a point of recognizing when your child shows compassion!

BODY SAFETY
We will be having our annual body safety lessons in December. These lessons will take place the week of December 12th. The program consists of age appropriate lessons that will be taught to your child by the elementary school counselor. Unfortunately, recent counts show that sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe. As a result, our children need to be taught assertiveness and self-protection skills to prevent such tragedies. This program is presented in a non-threatening, informative way.
Parents, please check the E-Friday Folder for important information regarding body safety and how to discuss this topic with your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Miller at 852-1036 ext. 1218
