See what's happening at Cardinal Elementary
February 3, 2017
Happy February!

The Parent Staff Group needs YOU! Our next PSG meeting is being held on Tuesday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the media center. Without parents like you, our students and teachers would not have all that they need. The PSG helps provide teaching materials for the classrooms, purchases supplies for the classrooms, provides incentives, and most importantly gives many man hours to help our school run smoothly. BUT the PSG can't do that without you. Please join us at our next meeting.

Counselor Appreciation Week: Next week we will be celebrating Mrs. Miller during the counselor appreciation week. If you or your child would like to write a special note to Mrs. Miller, these can be delivered to her throughout the week. Cardinal is so lucky to have Mrs. Miller and all of the things she does for our school.

Family Science Night Grades K-2: If you are able to volunteer, please let Matt Halsmer know which time slot you would prefer. You can contact him via email at [email protected].
A - 5:30 - 7:00 (includes setup)
B - 7:00 - 8:30 (includes clean up)
C - 6:00 - 8:00 (Both Hours, setup and clean up appreciated)

Parents of 4th and 5th Grade Students - Each 4th and 5th grade student will participate in a Social Health Program during the month of March.  This program outlines the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty.  Students will be shown appropriate films for their age group followed by a question and answer period.  Parents are invited to preview these films at the Administration Office located at 310 Stadium Drive (Please enter through Door #7 on the back side of the building) on Tuesday, February 21 at 6:30 pm.  The preview will be facilitated by Assistant Superintendent Kat Jessup and Health Services Supervisor Melissa Smith.  If you have questions about the content of these films, please contact your child's school nurse.

Counselor's Corner

Our character trait for the month of February is PERSEVERANCE. Perseverance means that you never give up and keep working hard. "You grow stronger from your challenges. You learn a lot when things don't happen the way you want" (Author: Carol Burnett). Talk to your children about the necessity of working hard to accomplish goals and give them examples of times when you or they have achieved a goal. When the going gets tough, encourage your children to stick with what they are doing, don't give up easily. _____________________________________________________
Notes from the Nurse

Sooooooo,
what about SLEEP?

Everybody struggles with sleep from time to time. We know that a bad night now and then can cause some major problems with our ability to function at our best.

Children can also struggle to get adequate rest. The National Sleep Foundation recommends children ages 5 to 12 get 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night. The right amount of sleep helps a student pay attention better in school and be a more creative learner and problem solver. A well-rested student will also be healthier and have more stable moods. All in all, a student who gets good sleep interacts better with parents, siblings, teachers and friends!

Here are some tips to help your student sleep well:
  • Make sure their bedroom is cool, dark and quiet.
  • Set them a regular scheduled bedtime, and stick to it.
  • Don't allow any caffeine after 5pm.
  • Encourage running and playing after school, but not too close to time to go to bed.
  • Make their bedtime snack light and healthy, not heavy and greasy-no big meals within 2 hours of bedtime.
  • Set a routine and do it exactly the same way every night. . . a bath or shower, reading, listening to quiet music, dimming the lights-and no screen time for the hour before bed! A routine trains their bodies to get ready for sleep.

For more information about good sleep habits, search SLEEP FOR KIDS-A Service of the National Sleep Foundation.

A note from the music teacher, Miss Havala:

1st grade parents: The 1st grade music performance is coming up on Wednesday, March 8th at 6:30 pm in the Delaware Trail Gym! The theme of the performance is "Dancing and Singing Through the Decades". Please have your child arrive no later than 6:15 in the Delaware Trail cafeteria. Attire should represent one of the decades from the 1930's-1990's. See the hand-out in your child's folder for ideas. Also, Ms. Havala is looking for volunteers to decorate and set-up for the performance. In exchange for your help, she will save your family front-row seats. Please email her at   [email protected] if interested.

2nd grade parents*: This year, the 2nd graders will be having an informance, not a performance on Wednesday, March 8th at 7:30 pm in the Cardinal Gym. Unlike a performance, an informance is an interactive event where families get to experience what their children learn in music class first-hand. We will play instruments, read rhythms, and have fun with movement. Attire is casual because there will be movement at the event.
*This does not include Mrs. Smith's class since they were a part of the 3rd grade performance this year
