See what's happening at Cardinal Elementary
March 3, 2017

Happy Friday!

Only 10 more days until spring break, and only 5 more days until the end of the 3rd quarter.  This year is truly flying by.  I am so proud of how hard our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students worked this week during their ISTEP testing.  Each student put forth his/her best effort.  Thank you for encouraging your child and helping them feel at ease.

There are a few events I would like to highlight:
  • March PSG meeting - Monday, March 6 at 6:30pm in the media center.  I hope to see you there as we plan the Cardinal Carnival and begin thinking and talking about next year.
  • 3rd  Grade IREAD testing - all 3rd graders are required to take the IREAD assessment.  This will be on March 13th and 14th.
  • Spring parties - Friday, March 17.  Please remember that the PSG will be purchasing the snack for the parties.  There should be no outside food or candy brought to the parties.
  • Cardinal Carnival - Friday, April 7, 5:30 - 8:30pm.  There will be games galore, bounce houses, pies thrown at teachers, and carnival food.  Join us for a great time!
Finally, I would like to celebrate our students who have clipped up to Red throughout the week. I am so proud of their amazing behavior choices. This week we celebrate these students:
Alexander Dowden
Michael Lyons
Sammi Skaggs
Hailey Arnold
Cynthia Kowalski
Montell Staples
Braden Funkhouser

Have a wonderful weekend!

Social Health Program

All 4th and 5th grade students will participate in a Social Health Program on Thursday, March 16th. This program outlines the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. Students will be shown appropriate films for their age group followed by a question and answer period. If you have any questions regarding the content of these films, please contact your child's school nurse at [email protected]

Hearing Screening Information

Indiana State law requires students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10 to have their hearing screened. All kindergarten students and all students new to BCSC
will be tested as well. The Brownsburg Speech- Language Pathologists will be conducting hearing screenings at each school.  In an effort to conserve paper, only students who do not pass their hearing screenings will receive paperwork. (If your child does not pass their hearing screening, you will be notified of pass/did not pass results when a rescreening is done.)
A rescreen will be completed prior to the end of the school year. Please contact Emily Zeto, Cardinal's Speech-Language Pathologist, if you have any questions at [email protected].

Notes from the Nurse

Just when you thought it was safe to go outside-- It's allergy season again ! Here are some tips to help you cope:

Keep your windows closed, especially at night. Pollen levels tend to be highest between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. If your child and other family members have seasonal allergies, run your air conditioner instead of opening windows.

Have your child take a shower and change his clothes after he gets home. Pollen can stick to clothing and hair. It's also a good idea to get into the habit of having everyone remove their shoes when they get indoors.
Keep track of pollen counts. If your child is sensitive, monitoring pollen levels can help you know when to limit outdoor exposure.

Change your air filters. Change the air filters in your heating systems and air conditioners as directed by manufacturers' instructions.

See your pediatrician. In some cases, what seems like an allergy to pollen may be caused by another culprit, such as dust mites or pet dander. The best way to pinpoint the allergen or allergens that are causing your child's symptoms is to have your child evaluated.

Try some saline. If you want to try a natural alternative to allergy medications, talk to your doctor about using saline nose drops and saline drops for eyes. They can help rinse pollen out of your child's nasal passages and eyes. (Be sure to use simple saline, rather than medicated nasal solutions or eye drops. You should talk to your pediatrician before using any over-the-counter products and use only products that are meant to treat seasonal allergy symptoms in children.)

Talk to your doctor about allergy medications. Depending on your child's age and symptoms, your doctor may recommend over-the-counter antihistamines specifically dosed to safely treat children.

A note from the music teacher, Miss Havala:

1st grade parents: The 1st grade music performance is coming up on Wednesday, March 8th at 6:30 pm in the Delaware Trail Gym! The theme of the performance is "Dancing and Singing Through the Decades". Please have your child arrive no later than 6:15 in the Delaware Trail cafeteria. Attire should represent one of the decades from the 1930's-1990's. See the hand-out in your child's folder for ideas. Also, Ms. Havala is looking for volunteers to decorate and set-up for the performance. In exchange for your help, she will save your family front-row seats. Please email her at   [email protected] if interested.

2nd grade parents*: This year, the 2nd graders will be having an informance, not a performance on Wednesday, March 8th at 7:30 pm in the Cardinal Gym. Unlike a performance, an informance is an interactive event where families get to experience what their children learn in music class first-hand. We will play instruments, read rhythms, and have fun with movement. Attire is casual because there will be movement at the event.
*This does not include Mrs. Smith's class since they were a part of the 3rd grade performance this year
