Principal's Message

Cardinal Families!
Today ends the first full week of school. I can imagine your child was a bit tired this week as I know my own children are still getting used to the school schedule. Our students continue to come to school with smiles on their faces excited for what their teachers have planned for them.

This week teachers gave our students a reading assessment call the DIBELS test. This assessment informs teachers how well a student is reading and if there are areas where a student needs additional support. We utilize this reading data to help us plan lessons and provide the necessary support or extension for our students. Please contact your child's teacher should you have any questions.

I have already seen many parent volunteers in our school supporting our teachers and students. We can always use an extra set of hands to help make copies, display student work, work with students, or even cut out materials. If you are interested in volunteering, please be sure to contact your child's teacher or our PSG. It's because of support like this that we are able to do so many great things for our students.

Many parents enjoy eating lunch with their children during the school day. This is a fun time for our students as well because they are allowed to eat on the stage. I would like to inform you of our expectations. Students are allowed to invite one friend to eat with them on the stage with their parents. Students should be seated and eating the entire time. If younger siblings attend lunch as well, please be sure these children are seated as we don't want someone to get hurt on the stage. We also ask that cell phones be put away and that no pictures be taken during lunch. We want to respect the privacy of all of our students. Thank you for helping us by following and reinforcing these expectations with your child.

At Cardinal we use a clip chart for our behavior management system. This chart is used to recognize students for making great choices, but it is also used if a student happens to make a poor choice. Students move their individual clothes pins up or down based on the choices they make and when a teacher informs them to do so. The clip chart is fluid so students may move their clips down for a choice made in the morning, but after making better choices, they are able to move their clips back up, or vice versa.   Because we feel that reaching the top of the clip chart is such an extraordinary accomplishment, each week we recognize these students. The students' names are read aloud over the announcements, they receive a reward, and their pictures are put on our Red Wall of Fame. I also recognize these students in my weekly email. This week we celebrate these students:

Eli Kring
Ellery Calbert
Sofia Cabrera
Victoria Freije
Anica Smajevic

I hope your family has a fantastic weekend.
Sincerely,
Mr. Gianfagna

Counselor's Character Corner

I would like to introduce myself to all the Cardinal families. My name is Krissi Miller and this is my fourth year at Cardinal. Previously, I was a School Counselor in another school district for 8 years. I live here in Brownsburg with my husband and three children. This school year, I will be in the classrooms teaching lessons on character traits and bully prevention, work with students individually and in groups, and much more! I am so excited to work with your students!

The character trait for the month of August is Respect. Students will be involved in classroom lessons to learn effective, respectful ways to deal with conflict with others using a program called "Kelso's Choices". Our goal is to teach students several positive ways to deal with these difficult situations. Students will be taught the differences between a small problem and a big problem. Students are encouraged to try at least two of Kelso's nine choices to solve a small problem. If they have a big problem, they are to get help from a grown-up right away. Please talk with your children about the choices they have to work out conflicts and discuss different situations where they can choose the various options.

A Note from the School Nurse
  • School district policy requires a Hold Harmless form from a physician to give any prescription medication or adult strength over- the- counter medications to children under the age of 12.
  • Prescription medication must be brought to school in a properly labeled pharmacy container. Also, any controlled substance (i.e. ADHD medications) needs to be brought in to the clinic by a parent or guardian.
  • Please fill out an OTC permission form to allow me to give any children's strength over-the-counter medications, including cough drops, to your child while at school.
  • Students may not keep medication in their desk, pocket, or backpack, or lunch box.
  • Please keep your emergency contact numbers current with the front office. You never know when I may need to contact you!
  • Remind your child not to share hats, combs, brushes, headbands, etc. with other children while at school.
  • Flu shots are highly recommended!
  • Clinic forms can be found on the school website or in the clinic.
  • Don't forget to get a doctor's note for PE or recess if your child is injured and can't participate.

Please call me with any questions or concerns!
