Principal's Message

Cardinal Families!

I'm not sure you have been keeping track of time, but today marks the middle of the first quarter. We have been in school for 5 full weeks. Students and teachers are well into their routines. I want to encourage you to continue to monitor your child's academic progress by checking PowerSchool regularly but also by checking over your child's homework and graded papers. It's also important for students to continue to practice reading each day even if reading homework isn't assigned.

This week our new student council members met for the first time. These 4th and 5th grade students were chosen by their peers to represent their classrooms as well as serve all of Cardinal students. I would like to congratulate these students:

Counselor's Character Corner
The character trait for the month of September and October is Responsibility.  Responsibility means being accountable for what we say and do. College Go Week is September 26- 30. This is a week for students to be thinking of their plans for college and career success.   Our elementary students are on the road to college and there are many things they can do now to ensure a successful future.  They can show the character trait of responsibility by doing their best every day by following the ideas below:

1. Do your homework
Doing your homework will help you keep up your grades and develop your skills for test time. Working on problems or reading a little each day will keep the ideas fresh in your head. You'll do better on standardized tests like the ISTEP+ if you do your homework, too.

2. Pay attention
If you are tempted to talk to friends or daydream when your teacher is talking, come up with strategies to stay focused on your learning. Ask to sit at the front of the class or talk to your parents or teacher if you need help.

3. Study
Don't plan on just remembering everything before a test.  Schedule time the night before a test to review the material. You may find that you learn best if you make flashcards or say things out loud.

4. Eat right
Making healthy food choices can help you learn better. No one can concentrate on an empty stomach! Always eat breakfast.

5. Get enough sleep
Your body-including your mind-won't function right if you don't give yourself enough sleep. Getting enough sleep will help you to pay attention better, and it will be easier to remember what you're learning in school.

BODY SAFETY PARENT PREVIEW NIGHT

Body Safety Parent Preview Night: Tuesday, November 1 from 6:00 - 7:00 at Eagle Elementary (cafeteria)
Parents are invited to attend this meeting to learn about the age-appropriate lessons that will be taught to your children this school year by the elementary school counselors. Unfortunately, recent counts show that sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe. As a result, our children need to be taught assertiveness and self-protection skills to prevent such tragedies. This program is presented in a non-threatening, informative way.

Parents, please join us so that you can see the videos and hear about the lessons that will be presented at each grade level. For the lessons we will be using the same videos as last year for all grades with the exception of 4th grade.  A new video will be used this year.

WHAT: Digital Parenting:  Raising children in a social media world
WHO: BCSC PD presents helpful information to all Brownsburg parents
WHEN: Tuesday, September 20th, 6:30pm
WHERE: Brownsburg East Middle School Cafeteria, 1250 East Airport Road, enter door #7 or #12
WHY: To help equip parents and guardians with the knowledge, tools, tips and tricks needed to navigate the world of social media with their students.

Influenza vs. Cold vs. Seasonal Allergies
&
The Importance of Flu Shots

As we say goodbye to summer the signs of fall start to appear. The temperature gets cooler and the leaves begin to change colors as they fall from the trees. Along with the fall season comes the dreaded flu season. As the weather changes, you or your child may start to experience sneezing, sniffles, and a sore throat and start to question whether it's a cold, seasonal allergies, or influenza, commonly known as the flu. It can be difficult to tell them apart because many of the symptoms are similar, but understanding the differences will help you choose the best treatment.
Cold, flu, and seasonal allergies all affect your respiratory system but each condition has key symptoms that set them apart. Colds and the flu are caused by different viruses whereas allergies are caused by your immune system reacting to a trigger, or allergen, which is something you are allergic to (Ex: Pollen, pet dander).
Both cold and flu can lead to a runny/stuffy nose, congestion, cough, and sore throat. However, with the flu, symptoms tend to be more severe. The flu can also cause a high fever that last for 3-4 days, along with a headache, fatigue and general aches and pains. These symptoms are less common with a cold, although young children can experience a fever with a cold.
Allergies occur when you are exposed to an allergen/trigger and the immune cells in your nose and airways overreact to these harmless substances by releasing histamine. Histamine causes the delicate respiratory tissues to swell and your nose may become stuffy or runny. Allergies can also cause itchy, watery eyes which normally do not occur with a cold or flu.
stuffy or runny. Allergies can also cause itchy, watery eyes which normally do not occur with a cold or flu.

If you believe you or your child may have the flu and the symptoms are severe or become severe, please seek medical attention immediately to avoid complications, such as bronchitis and pneumonia among others. Prevention is the key to dealing with the flu season. The BEST way to prevent the spread of germs is to properly wash your hands often, as well as avoiding close contact with anyone who may have the flu, and getting the flu vaccine every year.
The flu is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a recent study showed that the flu vaccination was associated with a 74% reduction in flu-related hospitalizations of children during the 2010-2012 flu seasons. It is especially important that individuals who are at greater risk of developing serious flu complications (young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions) get vaccinated yearly. The CDC recommends that individuals be vaccinated as soon as a vaccine becomes available, if possible by October. It takes about two weeks for the body to produce antibodies to provide protection against the flu. For further information regarding the flu, please consult a physician and/or visit the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm.

CARDINAL RED BIRD RUN FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16

The Cardinal Red Bird Run is Friday, September 16, 2016.  The Red Bird Run is our largest annual fundraiser and money raised at the event goes towards funding student field trips, classroom supplies, school improvement items, teacher requests and school technology needs.

Our goal for the Cardinal Red Bird Run is $12,000. Although this goal may seem lofty, it is very attainable.  If every student at Cardinal collected only $25 dollars we would reach our $12,000, which nearly covers half of our entire PSG budget for the 2016-2017 school year.
All students will receive a t-shirt on the day of the run. This t-shirt will also be used by all students for Field Day at the end of the school year.  Students will receive a raffle ticket for every $20 in donations they collect. We will have a variety of fun prizes we will raffle off at the end of the run.

We will also have boy and girl baskets filled with a variety of toys, books, art supplies and much more for the boy and girl who brings in the most donations at each grade level.

Yankee Candle Fundraiser Starts Soon

The 16th Annual Yankee Candle fundraiser for the Brownsburg Education Foundation (BEF) is around the corner.  On Friday, September 9th, each student will receive a catalog to share with family and friends. The BEST and EASIEST way to order is online and you will find the instructions for sending the link for online ordering to your family and friends in the packet. Online orders will be delivered directly to the one ordering by mail in 2-3 weeks. If the paper order form is used, the order form and money need to be returned by September 28th to your school. You will have to pick up and distribute anything ordered using the paper order form on November 8th & 9th at the BCSC Maintenance Facility at 550 Airport Road.  Proceeds from this fundraiser go toward teacher educational grants and student schol-arships that are given out each year by the BEF whose mission is to encourage and support creativity, innovation, and excellence that will enhance the educational community of the Brownsburg Communi-ty School Corporation.  Thank you for your support of BEF!
