Last week, we celebrated Mass and ashes were put on our foreheads. As the ashes were being placed on us, we heard the words:" repent, and believe in the Gospel." While the season of Lent fills us with thoughts of sacrificing and "giving up" something, the Church tells us that it is a time of rejoicing and hope too. You see, Lent does bring our sins and our failings to the forefront, but as Christians, we know the end of the story. It is not only the suffering and death of Jesus that we commemorate, but also the Resurrection. The tough part is we cannot get to the glory of the Resurrection without shouldering the cross.
We all have our crosses to bear each day: money troubles, relationship issues, challenges at work and at home; all of these can make the joy of the Resurrection seem distant. One thing is for sure, though. If we listen to the voice of the Lord who speaks to us through our friends and in our hearts, we will discover that we already have the grace to overcome even the most difficult hardships. We know this because our faith tells us this. And as parents, we are obligated to teach this to our kids. We can do them no greater service than to model our faith for them. These are trying times for our students as they face decisions we never had to contend with in our youth. They have the temptations of drugs, alcohol, immorality, and a host of others presented to them every day with an abundance and fervor that has not been seen before. But if we teach them that our faith is the answer to holding strong against the tide of temptation and sin, we will prepare them for the future in the most important way.
I order to do this, we must live the faith we want our students to live. During this Lenten season, let's recommit to our faith by attending Mass or Church every Sunday and just as importantly, let's make sure we get our kids to Mass as well. We can't expect them to walk the walk if we don't model it ourselves. We would never let our students go hungry even for one day; let's make sure we feed their soul too.
Have a holy and joyous Lent.
Deacon David Yazdiya

| GUIDANCE
"Things sure have changed since I went to college" commented a parent at the College Fair held February 27th at the Hyatt Regency. "I agree" said Davidson College, Vice President and Admissions Director. It's no secret, college admissions is a process and a competitive one which begins freshmen year! Congratulations to all BJS students who attended the Fair.
In recent weeks I've celebrated our students' gifts by attending athletic senior nights, the NHS induction ceremony and our inaugural Lacrosse game. At each event, I was happy to catch up with BJS alums who confirmed that BJS indeed prepared them for college and helped make the high school to college process a smooth and successful transition. Anna den Boef (2011) and her parents remarked that she had read some of the English Literature books assigned to her in college at BJS. Marcus Ferrari (2010) shared that "some of the BJS math classes were harder than my freshman math." It's rewarding to know at BJS we "walk the talk" as Bishop Snyder and Deacon Yazdiya say. To that end Guidance offers the following as we enter our 4th and final quarter:
Seniors: Senior Plan Forms - Deadline April 23
- Keep and attach copies of all admission & financial award letters
- Sign up for Bright Futures - Deadline May 30th
- Give your attendance confirmations to colleges - Deadline May 1st.
Juniors: Register and take both SAT and ACT by June.
All Underclassmen: Set a GPA goal and work hard to achieve your goal.
