Save the Date: Back to School, Back to Basics
Sure, the kids are probably outside frolicking right now, but the new school year is right around the corner. The first day of classes for CCSD schools is Monday, Aug. 29. Are you ready? You will be, after attending the annual
Back to School, Back to Basics backpack event.
What: Back to School, Back to Basics
When: Friday, Aug. 12, 2016 | 8:30 a.m. - noon
Where: Juvenile Justice Gymnasium, 651 N. Pecos Rd., Building J, Las Vegas
All children in DFS care will receive:
- Backpacks
- School supplies
- Vital information about available community services
- And much more!
NOTE:
If you receive a backpack at the DFS Back to School, Back to Basics event, you will not be eligible for one at the CASA Back to School Party.

Look Sharp! Haircuts, School Supplies & Much More at CASA's Back to School Party!
Get your kids ready for the new school year with a little style at CASA's annual Back to School Party! It's a fun-filled day of haircuts, hairstyles, manicures and music along with books, backpacks and school supplies. All services and supplies are generously donated by CASA and the stylists and manicurists at Square Colour Salon & Spa and Atelier by Square Salon.

Who: Children in Licensed DFS and Specialized Foster Care Homes
When: Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016 | 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

If you receive a backpack at the DFS Back to School, Back to Basics event, you will not be eligible for one at this event

To Book Your Appointment:
- Beginning on July 15, 2016, call Square Salon at 702-255-7050 or Atelier at 702-906-1770 to schedule an appointment. Please note: appointments will be available on a first-call, first-served basis. Online appointments will not be honored. Calls made prior to July 15, 2016 will not be given an appointment.
- While Square and CASA would like to help all children, please understand that all children must have an appointment. Walk-ins will not be served.
- Please provide first and last name, age, gender, and ethnicity of each child along with the name and contact phone number of the foster parent.

Education Spotlight: CCSD Summer Programs Help Kids Retain Knowledge
Summer offers a great opportunity for kids to relax, have fun and recharge their batteries for the upcoming school year. However, research has shown children often don't retain everything they learned in the previous year.
Dr. Leslie Strasser Murdock, DFS's educational liaison, shares some great summer programs provided by CCSD to assist parents and children retain what they've learned so they'll be ready for the new school year.

Making Good Matches for Children & Caregivers is Our PRIME Directive
Matching children in care with caregivers is a blend of art and science. Coming soon to assist caregivers and child welfare professionals is a new resource that will enhance Family Services' capability to identify good matches more quickly with PRIME.

CANNONBALL! Join Us for Family Swim Night on July 29th
It's hot outside! Cool off with a dip in the pool! Family Services is hosting a FREE and EXCLUSIVE Swim Night for all licensed DFS families!
What: Family Swim Night
When: Friday, July 29, 2016 from 6 - 8 p.m.
Where: Desert Breeze Aquatic Facility,
8275 Spring Mountain Rd., Las Vegas
This event is limited to licensed DFS caregivers, their biological children, adopted children and children currently placed in their homes.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
- Groups must maintain a one-adult-to-four-children ratio for children under 8 years of age. The designated adult must be in the water within arm's reach of any child under age 8 and any non-swimmer.
- All non-swimmers must be wearing Coast Guard-approved life jackets when they are in or around the pool area.
- Per NAC 444.280, for your safety and the safety of others, Clark County Aquatics and the Southern Nevada Health District require only swimsuit clothing that is manufactured for swimming to be worn in County pools. This policy is designed to help maintain a sanitary environment as well as to minimize specific drowning-hazards. We respectfully request swimsuits appropriate for family environments only.
- Children who wear diapers must use swim diapers/plastic pants with elastic legs and waist in addition to wearing a swimsuit.
- When registering your family for this event, you will be prompted to read and acknowledge the following two documents:

Community Partner Spotlight: The Center
The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada works to support and promote activities aimed at furthering the well-being and human rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community, its allies and Southern Nevada residents of low to moderate income. It has also been a community leader in promoting acceptance and tolerance within the child welfare system.

Children's Mental Health: Finding Help, Finding Hope
Children, in particular, need to have good mental health if they are going to live up to their full potential and thrive in a life that is filled with promising experiences. It's important to encourage children to have the willingness to do what is best for themselves and the people around them.
