Back to School Events from CASA & DFS Provide Backpacks to 1,000+ Children in Care
Thanks to an outpouring of support from donors throughout Clark County, more than 1,000 children in care received backpacks and school supplies at a pair of events last week. The Department of Family Services' annual
Back to School! Back to Basics event and
CASA's Back to School Party provided backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and much more for children in DFS care.
"We are so grateful to sponsors, donors, vendors and volunteers who came together to help us make sure our children in care start the school year with everything they need to succeed," said Denise Parker of DFS, one of the organizers of the event. "This event shows how much impact we can make when DFS collaborates with community partners and caregivers to achieve a goal."

Upcoming Webinar to Cover Normalcy, Prudent Parenting
All DFS staff and foster parents
will be required to attend a training on Normalcy, with the first opportunity
coming later this month. The presentation will include a panel discussion featuring a case manager, a foster parent, a former foster youth and a birth parent. QPI Coordinator Denise Parker will moderate the discussion.

Normalcy is the right of all youth in licensed out-of-home care to have the opportunity for normal growth and development and to be offered the chance to participate in age-appropriate activities, responsibilities and life skills.

There is Help, There is Hope: Save a Life by Recognizing the Suicide Warning Signs
September is designated as
National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Did you know Nevada currently has the sixth highest suicide rate in the nation? Thanks to local and statewide efforts, Nevada has been gradually reducing its suicide rate.
The concerted efforts of the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention, the Office of Suicide Prevention and the many local task forces and coalitions across the state hosting events and providing vital information help make Nevada a healthier and safer place to live. You could be the difference between life and death for a person who needs help.

"I think that after a child is adopted you should still be able to get some help with daycare. Most people live check to check daycare is so expensive. The state I was from paid daycare in full until you no longer needed it."
Hi, Alana. Thanks for your feedback. A post-adoption sub-workgroup within the QPI Child Welfare Workgroup is currently addressing issues affecting children and adoptive parents. The Child Welfare Workgroup brings together caregivers like you with Family Services staff and child welfare professionals throughout Clark County each month to identify issues impacting our families and develop solutions.
We will certainly pass your suggestion along to that group. In addition, we encourage you and other caregivers to get involved. You are more than welcome to join the meetings, which are held the fourth Tuesday of each month. The next Child Welfare Workgroup meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. in the Lincoln Room at Family Services' Central offices (121 S. Martin Luther King Blvd.).
