2012: The Year in Review

Recently CFCF Executive Director, Ron Hollander, spoke about the highlights of a terrific 2012 and excitement for 2013. "It was a year of great progress and connection and I am extremely grateful to so many of you for sharing your time, your energy and your perspectives with me. It has been a particular joy and privilege to work with you and I look forward to continuing our work together in 2013". A full review will be able to be read on Ron's blog, but here are some of the themes and accomplishments for 2012.

In research, the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation made tremendous progress in supporting and expanding a Ron Hollander, Judy Garber, Renata Pasqualini community of top researchers and labs. This year, the Foundation built on breakthroughs. Research funded in 2012 and beyond will be taking these findings to the next level. The generous support of our individual donors and private foundation supporters is what fuels this process!

This year was a year of collaboration. CFCF worked with other organizations to bring awareness and focus to NET cancer. We were invited to join the World NET Cancer Awareness Day (WNCAD) Council and attended our first meeting in 2012,  as well as participated at the 2012 BIO Convention. Our friend and supporter Pam Ter Gast, a NET patient, helped to further disease awareness with her keynote address ACS CAN Breakfast with the American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network. Education and information was brought to patients across the country with our work with patient advocacy and support groups and patient education events at major medical centers.

All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without the support of our donors, longtime and new supporters. While CFCF receives some limited support for this newsletter and its educational programming from pharmaceutical companies, our research is entirely supported by private donations from individuals and by the generosity of a few organizations who are committed to our mission. There CFCF Runner has been an outpouring of support and an outstanding effort to organize fundraising events made by so many. "From cycling to dodgeball, from walks to marathon runs, from dinners to baseball games, so many of you have organized amazing fundraisers in your communities to support our work".

We have been honored to work with all of you and we are appreciative.

CFCF Awards New Research Grant

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation is pleased to announce its final grant award of 2012 to Dr. Guillermina Lozano from the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center. This grant represents the fourth grant issued to advance last year's promising findings  and generate models that the entire neuroendocrine tumor research community can use to develop new treatments for patients.

Dr. Lozano and her team will generate and characterize mouse  models to better understand neuroendocrine tumors and the cooperating events that lead to tumor growth.

In 2012, CFCF awarded more than 2 million dollars to research. We are so grateful to our supporters for enabling this promising research for patients.

Upcoming Education Event

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation is proud to support the  NorCal CarciNET's upcoming educational day focusing on NETs. From discovery and diagnosis, through treatment and living with cancer for both patients and support givers. Experts from UCSF, Stanford, Vanderbilt University, and Cedars Sinai will be on hand to share their knowledge on NETs and living with cancer.  The conference welcomes patients, support providers and those who treat patients with NETs. Ride for Research ATV Rally

The Ride for Research ATV Rally, held at the Rathmel Run Hunting Preserve in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania,  is an annual event that brings together local volunteers and ATV riders in the hope of trying to make in difference in the area of cancer research. ATV riders traverse a 20 mile trail in the rolling hills Ride for Research of Western Pennsylvania at their leisure, eventually gathering at a mud pit finish line. The event raises proceeds with ride entries, a 50/50 drawing, two concession stands, t-shirt sales, and donations from local businesses.

Co-Chairman Susan Day donated this year's event proceeds to the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation. "This year's donation of the proceeds has a more personal reason behind it, as my sister was diagnosed with carcinoid in November 2012 and my Ride for Research mother had a pancreatic resection to remove a neuroendocrine tumor in January 2009". The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation is grateful for the generous donation of $15,000 made in honor of Susan's mother and sister.

The first "Ride for Research" was held in October 2005. This year, the 2012 ride had 297 riders and was the biggest event to date. Currently the event has raised over $60,000 towards cancer research.
