Those of you who were anticipating sampling the fine bourbon tomorrow from our newest vendor, the Indiana Whiskey Co., will, unfortunately be disappointed. We have just learned that they will not be with us tomorrow due to a disagreement between a member of the Indiana legislature and the State ABC.
Sound familiar. Think back a couple of weeks when members of the Legislature determined, in the face of pressure from lobbyists, that Ricker's could not sell cold beer, even though they had been legally issued permits to do so. The powers that be in the House and Senate said, "Whoa ABC, we don't think you have read the law right. You can't do that."
Well, from what we understand, a distributor of liquor came to the Market last Saturday and said, "Whoa, that is competition. That is not right." The distributor then called a certain Indiana senator who said, Hard liquor does not belong at farmers markets. I will call the Commission." He told them that he did not interpret the law, which clearly says distilleries can be at festivals, to mean they can be at farmers markets.
So until the original sponsors of the legislation can be contacted to elaborate on what their intent was, distilleries have been asked to not appear at farmers markets.
We will keep you posted about this issue and about how soon, or if, we can expect this new, valued vendor to be back.
