Open Door Farm

Jillian and Ross Mickens started farming at the Breeze Incubator Farm and are now farming their own land in Cedar Grove.  They strive to be a source of healthy food that is produced in a manner that is sustainable for the environment and financially and emotional beneficial to them and their community.

Fun Facts

Jillian is a registered dietician with a Masters in Public Health from UNC.  She focused her course of study on local food systems and how health professionals can help communities and individuals overcome the barriers to accessing local food. She now works full-time on the farm.

Ross is a full-time electrical engineer and a jack-of-all-trades who helps out on the farm before work and on the weekends.

They want to give customers the tools to eat more fruits and vegetables, so they usually have recipes on hand at Market, and have a great recipe archive on their website!

What's Happening at Market

Happy Friday!

A trip to Market to see your favorite friends, farmers, and artisans is the perfect cure for the rainy day blues! You all know a little bit or a lot of rain won't stop us from having a gorgeous spring Market, so grab the rain boots and an umbrella and we will see you there!

This Saturday is assistant manager Margaret's last day working with the Market, so be sure to tell her how great she is!  Margaret has been planning Market special events and managing our food outreach programs for the last three years, but that doesn't even come close to describing the positive impact she has made. Margaret has been a mentor and a friend to me and a passionate advocate for the Market. Her positive attitude, humor, kindness and sincerity will be missed even more than her magical excel spreadsheet skills and superhuman attention to detail. We can't wait to see what incredible work she does for our friends at RAFI. Congrats Margaret!

Last week we received the WCHL People's Choice Award for "Best Locally Grown!" We are so grateful for this honor, and we sure do feel loved! Thanks to everyone that voted for us!

One of the BEST local food events of the year is coming up in just a few weeks on June 3-5. If you have not gotten your tickets yet to Farm to Fork, get to it before they sell out.

The folks at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems sure know a thing or two about good food, and they bring out our favorite farmers and the finest chefs in the area for their events! The proceeds all go back to CEFS to support their programs that support new farmers like their Breeze Incubator Farm, and it's worth every penny.  Several of our farmers, including our vendor of the Week, Open Door Farm, have benefited from Breeze Farm! Here's a rundown of the weekend.

Friday, June 3rd
Sustainable Supper and Square Dance at the Haw River Ballroom - Tickets are just $35!

Saturday, June 4th
Dinner with James Beard Award Winning Chef Andrea Reusing and President Obama's former personal Chef Sam Cass at the Durham Hotel.

Sunday, June 5th
Farm to Form Picnic at Breeze Farm
The event also spotlights fourteen local food artisans and breweries; each providing samples of their products, and local wine, coffee and tea companies.

Happy Shopping,
Erin Jobe, Market Manager

Chapel Hill Creamery will be at Market Saturday!

With greenhouse tomatoes, people are enjoying our Fresh Mozzarella and Dairyland Farmers for salads and sandwiches. These fresh, unaged cheeses really have the yellow color of carotene from the grass the cows are grazing. Use these for cooking or try the Smoked Mozzarella and Smoked Farmers for a stronger flavor. Add the Farmers to eggs or Mexican dishes. Other cheeses to sample and buy include 7 1/2 month old Calvander which is similar to an Asiago, ripe Carolina Moon, semi-ripe New Moonand Pheta. Our Hickory Grove is mild but savory; it is a washed rind cheese that is not as strong as its stinky cousins but is still full of flavor. Good for snacking; it also makes a great grilled cheese or omelet. Hickory Grove is being used on a cheeseburger at Carolina Brewery.

Whey fed pork Wednesday includes Breakfast Country Sausage in bulk, Mild Italian sausagespare ribs, bacon, ground pork. We hope to get our other sausages in for this weeks market as well. Try our flavorful ground beefIt makes a delicious burger, cheeseburger, or pasta sauce.
