What's Happening at Market

Happy Wednesday, everybody!

I'm Margaret, the assistant manager of the market.  You don't hear from me much - you might only know me as a Person At Market With A Clipboard.  To fill out the picture for you: I help make our events happen (like last week's Strawberry Jamboree!), run our SNAP/EBT program, plan youth programs, and work with our wonderful community partners to get the word out about all of it.  Today I'll be running the Wednesday Market.

Spreading the word about the Market at a local Health Fair!

Transitions have been on my mind recently.  You know what they say: change is the only constant.  We see a lot of transition at the market, whether it is farms passing to the next generation, or new vegetables coming into style, or the gradual evolution of the Market's programming.  And you know how around this time of year, you're starting to get worried about how much longer the strawberries & kale can hold out, because they're delicious and you love them and you will miss them when they're gone, but you're also just SO excited for blueberries and basil and eggplant and all the other wonderful things coming down the line?

That's how I'm feeling right now: at the end of this week I will be moving on from the market, transitioning into a new job at RAFI-USA.  I'll be working on their Beyond Hunger Relief program, which exists to identify, develop and expand sustainable solutions to food insecurity that also work to strengthen just and sustainable agriculture.  I'm SO excited to do this important work with such a great organization, and... wow.  I'm going to miss you all.  It's been a privilege and a pleasure to work for the Carrboro Farmers' Market for the past three years.  This community is every bit as wonderful as kale and strawberries, and I'm sad to be saying goodbye.  But only kind of goodbye; while I won't be on staff any more, I will absolutely still be visiting to shop and see all the wonderful people there - I hope you'll say hi!

See you around,
Margaret Krome-Lukens
Assistant Manager

Ps. Carrots are back at Market, along with garlic scapes, broccoli, cauliflower, kolhrabi and and sugar snap peas and even a few blueberries!

Chapel Hill Creamery
Chapel Hill Creamery will be at Market this week!

With warmer weather, people are enjoying our Fresh Mozzarella, Dairyland Farmers, and PhetaUse these with tomatoes, cucumbers, green salads, or pasta dishes. Our Pheta is firmer and more crumbly than the farmers cheese and is aged in a traditional salt brine. The fresh, unaged cheeses really show the yellow carotene from the grass the cows are grazing. Other cheeses to sample and buy include 7 1/2 month old Calvander which is similar to an Asiago, ripe Carolina Moon, semi-ripe New Moon, Smoked Mozzarella, and Smoked Farmers. Our Hickory Grove is mild but savory; it is a washed rind cheese that is not as strong as its stinky cousins but is still full of flavor. Good for snacking; it also makes a great grilled cheese or omelet. Hickory Grove is being used on a cheeseburger at Carolina Brewery.

Whey fed pork Wednesday includes Breakfast Country Sausage in bulk, Mild Italian sausage, spare ribs, bacon, ground pork. Try our flavorful ground beef. It makes a delicious burger or add it to your favorite pasta sauce.

Box Turtle Bakery
Box Turtle Bakery will be at Market

I haven't done the Lemon Poppyseed Muffins in a while and am bringing them back with the new muffin method where I ferment the flour in yogurt overnight before mixing up the muffin batter.  I can't remember where I heard some chef talking about layers of flavor in a sauce, but I think of that sometimes with these techniques where I ferment the yogurt for 24 hours to full flavor, mill the wheat fresh, soak the flour, etc. - slogan of the week: layers of flavor
