What's Happening at Market

Happy Wednesday!

As farmers markets and local food gain popularity across the nation, more research is being done to show the impacts of the local food systems and direct sales from farmers to consumers. We think this is a great sign that local food systems are here to stay, and the more we data we have to show their impact, the better!

One recent example of this is a study released by the Economists at the Economic Research Service (ERS) that found that farmers who market goods directly to consumers are more likely to remain in business than those who market only through traditional channels.

This is no surprise to us. Farming is certainly a risky business with very tight margins, and not every farmer that begins selling at the Market is able to make a living do it. However, we have a long list of farms that have sold at the Market for over 15 or 20 years, and that is certainly something to be proud of!   The Market is a place where small scale farmers can  sustainably  grow their business by creating a loyal customer base. The Market's stall fees are affordable and vendors take home 100% of their sales!

Thanks to you all for making the Carrboro Farmers' Market a thriving place where farmers can make a living!

In other news, strawberries are making a bounce back after last week's stormy weather, and there should be plenty at Market today. Don't forget that this Saturday is our Strawberry Jamboree!

Garlic scapes, broccoli, cauliflower, kolhrabi and and sugar snap peas are is season as well! You may also find a few of the first summer squash and cucumbers!

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Chapel Hill Creamery
Chapel Hill Creamery will be at Market this week!

We have Burrata  this Wednesday ! This is a pouch of our golden and tender mozzarella that we stretch in hot water, fill with a mix of shredded mozzarella and cream, and seal at the top. Set this out to warm to room temperature and serve with crusty bread as an appetizer for one or two people. We will also have our Fresh Mozzarella in half pound balls to go with greenhouse tomatoes in a Caprese salad or a pizza.

We will have  Dairyland Farmers and our  Pheta which are great for warm weather to add to greens and salads. Our  Hickory Grove is mild but savory; it is a washed rind cheese that is not as strong as its stinky cousins but is full of flavor. Good for snacking; it also makes a great grilled cheese or omelet. Other cheeses to sample and buy include 7 1/2 month old  Calvander which is similar to an Asiago, ripe  Carolina Moon, semi-ripe New Moon, Smoked Mozzarella, and  Smoked Farmers.

Our popular and flavorful sausage include  Breakfast Country Sausage in bulk,  Sage and Maple Breakfast in links,  Mild Italian. We'll also have our  spare ribs, bacon, ground pork, and flavorful  ground beef.

Everything we sell comes from our farm where we tend to the pastures, the young calves, the adult cows, and the whey fed pigs. Try the Hickory Grove or the Smoked Mozzarella for a cheeseburger, or grill our sausage for a delicious Italian sub or to add to greens and polenta.

This week's tip sheet:
Glazing vegetables!
Last week we learned about braising, and this week we'll glaze our way to remarkably flavorful spring vegetables. We use this technique on radishes, turnips, peas, beets and mushrooms, which are all available at market right now. Come grab a tip sheet and glaze some veggies this week!
