Vendor of the Week:

Perry-Winkle Farm

Cathy Jones and Mike Perry have been growing on 4 acres of their 33-acre farm in northern Chatham County since 1991. They use sustainable practices such as cover crops, crop rotation, and biodiversity help keep pests and diseases in check and enhance crop quality.  They grow about 120 varieties of flowers and provide them for special events as well as selling them at the Market.

Fun Facts

Cathy has been on the board of the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (SSAWG) for the past 26 years. She has helped this SSAWG act as a voice for the underrepresented family farms across the southeast.

Perry-winkle's vegetable specialty is potatoes, and it is also Mike's favorite crop to grow.

The meat chickens Mike raises are called "Freedom Rangers," and they are well adapted to life on the pasture, living under portable shelters that provide them with shade, fresh grass for foraging and a clean place to live and sleep.

Another  FRESH CHICKEN  Saturday announcement- Michael's latest batch of  Freedom Ranger broilers are ready and we will have coolers full of whole birds and all your favorite cuts this weekend.  His monthly trips to the processor in Marion, NC means that there is a good deal of customer anticipation and then excitement when these pasture-raised broilers are ready.  Our routine here at the farm is more daily in nature... there is the normal watering and feeding, but also our three broiler houses (aka chicken tractors) are moved every day to insure the birds are on fresh forage. You can see in this photo that the birds are given lots of room and fresh air but also ample shade and protection from predators.

While we anticipate a lot of activity on the "chicken end" of our market stall, we will also have a good supply of greens (collards, kale, arugula and sorrel) and the flower shop will be filled with mixed bouquets and straight bunches.  Please stop by to see us.

many thanks to all-

We will have some  Quark in plain and lemon to go with fresh strawberries  on Saturday. Quark is a fresh cows' milk cheese that is spreadable. It is made with whole milk, is a little tart, and has a texture between cream cheese and sour cream. It's popular in Germany and much of Europe. Delicious on toast with jam or a dark bread with radishes.

With warmer weather, people enjoy our  Fresh Mozzarella, Dairyland Farmers, and  Pheta. Use these with tomatoes, salads, or pasta dishes. Our Pheta is firmer and more crumbly that the farmers cheese and is aged in the traditional salt brine. Our Hickory Grove is mild but savory; it is a washed rind cheese that is not as strong as its stinky cousins but is still full of flavor. Good for snacking; it also makes a great grilled cheese or omelet. Other cheeses to sample and buy include 7 1/2 month old  Calvander which is similar to an Asiago, ripe Carolina Moon, semi-ripe  New Moon, Smoked Mozzarella, and  Smoked Farmers.

Our popular and flavorful sausage include  Breakfast Country Sausage in bulk,  Sage and Maple Breakfast in links, and Mild Italian. We'll also have our spare ribs, bacon, ground pork, and flavorful ground beef.

Everything we sell comes from our farm where we tend to the pastures, the young calves, the adult cows, and the whey fed pigs. Try the Hickory Grove or the Smoked Mozzarella for a cheeseburger, or grill our sausage for a delicious meal. Bon Appetit.
