Message from the Principal: What's New at Carver?
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I cannot believe I am writing these words. In September 2008 I moved my family from our home in San Francisco to begin this new job of opening the first public Waldorf high school in the country. This year marks the beginning of my 10th year in SCUSD following a dream -- a dream most of my colleagues thought was impossible.
And yet, here we are adding programs and faculty every year for 9 school years! I am so very proud of our work building Carver. This is the work of parents who willed the school to open at every SCUSD Board meeting for six years. It is the work of a dedicated and hardworking faculty and staff who have been growing and developing since the very beginning. It is the joy and learning of students and families for the past eight years!
As we open our 9th school year, I want to acknowledge our great hiatus last spring. As I agreed to support A.M. Winn Public Waldorf K-8 Waldorf school as an interim position as Winn grew and hired a new principal, Mr. Preston, our Spanish teacher stepped up to serve as assistant principal, as I led both schools. With gratitude and relief, I return full time to Carver as principal.
This fall we are grateful for Sr. Preston's service as he reenters the Spanish classroom. He will be joined by Sra. Celia Rothenberg, who is taking two sections Spanish 1.
We welcome Mr. Andrew Llorente in the Social Sciences. He will be teaching 12th grade Economics and Government and 10th Grade World History. Part of Mr. Llorente's job is filling in for Ms. Stephanie Cook who is taking a partial sabbatical and teaching only part time in 9th grade geography.
In addition to our new teachers, there is a new schedule based on the negotiations between our teachers' union SCTA and the school district SCUSD.
Please attend one of our mandatory back to school registration times for walk-in registration, and to purchase school supplies, and to donate to our Parent Guild which supports our school programs and student activities.
We look forward to a joyful and successful school year.

Sports at Carver
If you are interested in playing sports, our school district has arranged for Carver athletes to play at West Campus high school. Carver has a close relationship with West Campus and encourages all interested athletes to try out for their teams.

Carver Students Tour Italy & Greece
About two dozen Carver students, teachers, staff and parent chaperones participated in a 15-day tour of Italy and Greece this summer led by art teacher Mr. Roberto. Stops included Athens, the Greek Isles, Pompeii, Sorrento, Rome, Florence, Venice, Assisi and more! Check out these fun snapshots courtesy Ms. Mitchell, who helped chaperone.

Carver- Chengdu, China Partnership Continues
Since 2013, Carver High School has forged a strong partnership with the Chengdu Waldorf High School during which Dr. Alessandri spent summers and two weeks each school year helping train Waldorf high school teachers.
In 2014, Chengdu Waldorf School opened its high school, creating the first kindergarten to high school program in China. In addition to opening the high school, several students from Chengdu Waldorf School have come to Sacramento Waldorf school for high school. This fall, we will host a Chengdu Waldorf student in our 9th grade!
This summer Dr. Alessandri traveled again to Chengdu and presented a talk about "Parenting the Healthy Teenager." During a visit with Principal Li Zewu, the educators discussed partnering with Chengdu Waldorf High School to develop an exchange visit program for a three-week to three-month period over the summer. Please contact the office if you are interested in hosting a Chengdu Waldorf High School student and/or sending your student to China.
Dr. Alessandri says of her time in Chengdu: "I love the people and the culture. The people are so warm and welcoming. I learn so much every time I visit."

Carver Student Kudos!
George Washington Carver School of Arts and Science student Alyssa Gnos won $450 in the Caring for Our Watersheds proposal writing contest co-sponsored by the Center for Land-Based Learning and Agrium, an agriculture products supplier. Gnos also won a matching amount for her class at Carver.

More than 400 students sent in proposals for review. Proposals from the
top 10 finalists were presented to a panel of community judges. Gnos is the only finalist from an SCUSD school. She is now eligible for approximately $1,000 in funds to implement her project.
Gnos's proposal is to creatively raise awareness that storm drains deliver water and pollutants directly back to waterways. Her plan is to install inlet filters in neighborhood storm drains to reduce current oil and sediment delivery and use colorful imagery around each drain to educate about storm water runoff. Over the summer break, former and current Carver students and teachers demonstrated their support for mandated Ethnic Studies classes across the state at the California Department of Education.

Sacramento County DA Youth Academy
The Rancho Cordova Police Department encourages area high school students to apply for this year's Youth Academy. Students will learn about the criminal justice system and engage in open communication between law enforcement and themselves concerning issues that affect youth today - including race as a factor in the criminal justice system, use of force, gun violence, gangs, dating violence, human trafficking, marijuana, crime scene investigation and evidence, and distracted driving. A career fair will be held at graduation.
The program is open to current Sacramento County high school students (incoming 10th through 12th graders). Eligible students can apply for either the South, North, or East Area academy. They must submit a completed application, which can be downloaded at www.sacda.org. The deadline to apply is September 16, 2016. For questions, please email [email protected].
