Handmade at Carver
The season of giving is upon us and the Carver Gardening class has been hard at work all through the harvest! Please consider handmade items from our gardens and classrooms.
Carver is offering several types of preserves, tea, bath pods, and blank note cards designed by Carver students. We are also offering ornaments, including beautiful seashells knitted by our dear principal, Dr. Alessandri! Also available, GWC ball caps and homemade vanilla donated by a parent.

Jr. College Class for Students with 504s/IEPs
Sacramento City College is offering a college transition course for Sacramento City Unified School District high school seniors. Students can earn high school and college credit while they learn about: academics, priority registration for Fall 2017, how to use accommodations, financial aid, transferring to a university and independence. The class is for students who have 504 Plans or IEPs. Register for the spring semester Dec. 5-23, 2016 at

Join Carver's Co-Ed Volleyball Team
Carver is excited to offer a Co-ed Volleyball team for the Winter. Carver will play other small high schools in the Sacramento City Unified School District such as Health Professions, Science and Engineering and The Met, for example.
Mr. Matt Mossman has generously agreed to coach the team. Practices will start in January. Our first games will be at the end of January.

Chili Cook-Off a Success!
Carver's first-ever chili cook-off on Friday, Dec. 9 was a great success. Nearly 200 people came to taste more than 20 chili entries. The school Phoenix band entertained with original and stunning music.
Thank you to the vendors who displayed and sold their lovely craftsmanship. Thanks to the wonderful and hardworking students who set up, served and cleaned up. Thank you to the classes and vendors for the fabulous raffle.
Thank you to the Chili Cook off committee and the GWC Parent Guild for a fun and delicious community event. Our next parent guild meeting is Wednesday, Jan. 4. Please come and join us. We need you and would love to work together with you.

Carver is collecting Mint Tins-like Altoid tins, those little metal cute boxes you wish you had other uses for -- well now you do! Send your Altoid tins, or any other kind of mint tin, to the office.

Carver Awarded Two New Grants
Carver recently was awarded generous grants to enhance its high school program. Rancho Cordova continues to generously fund a variety of programs for schools. Carver won for a proposal to fund a field trip and an assembly from a city grant for both events. In February, for Black History Month, we will take an all school field trip to Sac State to see
Sacramento/Black Art of Dance
.
The grant from Rancho Cordova will cover the cost of coach buses and theater tickets expenses to take the whole school. Look for the field trip signature forms in January!
The second element of this grant is that Carver will have a historical one-person theater performance of an influential African American in February. We will host the middle school students from AM Win and Abraham Lincoln. In addition to the show, we will give the students a tour of the school and introduce them to the high school pathway at Carver.
Bringing middle school students onto campus is also a focus of our California State grant of $75,000 over three years. The state is giving high schools money to support College Preparation. At Carver we believe that the earlier students know they are college abound, the more likely they are to apply and enter a four year college.
Carver be inviting our middle school neighbors to Carver for a college and career fair in the spring. We will be offering ACT and SAT preparation courses in the spring and fall. And we will take all 10th and 11th graders on a tour of 2 different colleges. Please look for announcements about upcoming College Information evenings after the new year with our expert College Adviser, Astrid Kinn.

Update: PSAT Results Coming Home
Your student will be bringing home the PSAT results and their test booklet. You can refer to
this website for information about understanding your test and next steps.
Sophomores best preparation for college and the college admissions tests like ACT and SAT is to continue working hard in school and reading widely. Students will have the opportunity to take the PSAT again as Juniors. We recommend taking an SAT preparation class-which we will offer the spring of 11
th grade before taking the SAT.
