Intersession Begins Today!
Every January, and again at the end of the year, Carver schedules "Intersession."During this month all students have Main Lesson -- a special subject which they can explore deeply and intensively. Half of the senior class will prepare their Senior Play. Intersession is part of our Waldorf tradition at Carver.

24-Hour Parent Support Line

As the father who has raised seven teenagers and a marriage and family therapist, I have first-hand knowledge about the complicated stressors you can face in raising children and teens.
Parents are at the front line and there are things you can look out for that suggests something is wrong. Be aware of any changes in his/her normal behavior and mood like social withdrawal, lethargy, unexplained illness, drug or alcohol use, excess worry or guilt, unusual defiance and anger or changes in sleep or eating.
It is okay to ask your children about what they are thinking or feeling and if they are bothered by any thoughts. Be aware of how they react to the questions you ask and continue to monitor. There are steps you can take if your concerns continue.
Support is available to parents who have questions and concerns. Well Space Health offers a 24-hour, no cost parent support line which addresses a wide range of issues. The phone number is 1-888-281-3000. A highly-qualified mental health professional will be happy to talk with you.

Join Carver's Co-Ed Volleyball Team
Carver is excited to offer a Co-ed Volleyball team for the Winter. Carver will play other small high schools in the Sacramento City Unified School District such as Health Professions, Science and Engineering and The Met, for example.
Mr. Matt Mossman has generously agreed to coach the team. Practices will start in January. Our first games will be at the end of January.

Free Glaciology and Marine Programs for Young Women
Inspiring Girls Expeditions is accepting applications through January 31, 2017 for free summer science and wilderness expeditions in Alaska and Washington for girls ages 16 to 17.
The three Inspiring Girls trips of 2017 will include Girls on Ice Alaska, Girls On Ice Cascades and Girls in Icy Fjords. They are operated through IARC and the UAF College of Natural Science & Mathematics.

Biosphere 2 Summer Science Academy
The University of Arizona is accepting applications for its 2017 Biosphere 2 Summer Science Academy!
High school students will be hosted (those entering 9th- 12th grades in the fall of 2017), from July 16th -22nd, 2017.
The session includes hands on, inquiry-based science research with students working in teams.

Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Student Leaders Program
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Student Leaders® Program is accepting applications for the 2017 Student Leaders® program.
Since its inception in 2005, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,300 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities. The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:
- A summer eight-week paid internship with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization.
- The week-long, all-expense paid Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 9-14, 2017. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.

Host Families Sought for Foreign Exchange Students
Host a student from Spain or France this summer! American Discovery has been bringing cultures together for 25 years.
Spanish and French students (ages 14-18) will travel to Sacramento to participate in a 3-4 week home-stay program to practice speaking English, experience the "real" life of an American family, and create lasting friendships.
Host families agree to provide meals and lodging -- the students do not need their own room. There are no other costs involved!
