Message from the Principal: Our First Few Days

For me, the month of August stretches far too long -- too many days of a nearly empty campus. September 1st  is a day of celebration for us -- the day we can count on being together for learning and friendship. Students met in the gym for our annual Running of Gauntlet -- a welcome for the 9th grade, our class of 2020. (see video below)
 
Students found their way to their classes, met new classmates and new teachers.
 
Scenes from the first days of the school year. 
This first week is a time to settle in. It is a time to make sure everyone is in the right math class, that our classes are balanced with equal numbers of students. This means that there are some scheduling adjustments throughout the week as we ensure that students and teachers are in the right place at the right time. We also conduct daily "warm body counts" for Average Daily Attendance (ADA). In this waywe can determine our enrollment and also to invite students to enroll off the wait list, if there are seats available.
 
Within the classrooms, students are sharing stories from their summer. Ninth and tenth graders are practicing their writing skills reviewing summer reading. Eleventh graders are presenting their summer reading -- the activity they learned this summer. These projects vary from smoothie making, to car repair to symphony composition and salmon smoking. Our twelfth graders are beginning their college application process in addition to discussing ways to address global environmental issues.
 
Summer vacation is well behind us as we dive in deeply to our thinking and learning and working to find an answer to our question:  How will you engage the world?

GWC Parent Guild: Volunteers Needed

Calling FOOD FAIRIES!

Are you curious about a way to help the school, but have limited time? The "Food Fairy" Program is for YOU!

The staff at Carver work so hard to bring a wonderful educational experience. The GWC Parent Guild would like to have families volunteer to bring a healthful snack for the staff to enjoy at their weekly staff meetings.

Please sign up and be sure to bring enough for approximately 20 people. Please also bring recyclable plates.

Food can be dropped off in the Staff Lounge (either on the table or in the fridge if it needs to stay cold). Please label it as "Food Fairies" and delivered to the office by 2 p.m.

Anatolia-Kavala Ranch Bike Trail Grand Opening

Join the city of Rancho Cordova for the grand opening of the new Anatolia-Kavala Ranch Bike Trail 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12.

Festivities will kick off with a brief welcome and ribbon cutting ceremony at the trail entrance near Anatolia Drive and Pyxis Circle. The stroll ends with a neighborhood party at Kavala Ranch Park which includes a bounce house, face painting, dinner for purchase from a food truck, free ice cream and swag, music, and more!  Bring your walking shoes or bike and be the first to go on a half-mile stroll on the new trail.

The half-mile trail connects the Anatolia and Kavala Ranch communities to allow walking or biking between neighborhoods. The project will create a safe, convenient bike and walk route for families going to school or nearby parks, and for residents exploring the community or getting exercise.

All-School Field Trip: 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

Carver will take a whole-school field trip to Sacramento Theatre Company on October 12 to see "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Tickets are $15 and train fare is $3.50. Please make checks out to GW Carver in the amount of $18.50, unless your child has a bus pass, and drop them off at the office.

Sports at Carver

If you are interested in playing sports, our school district has arranged for Carver athletes to play at West Campus high school. Carver has a close relationship with West Campus and encourages all interested athletes to try out for their teams.
