What an eventful few weeks we have had...
It all began back on June 7th when the Metro State Board of Trustees voted to create a new non-resident tuition rate for students who had attended at least three years of high school in Colorado, graduated or gotten a GED and were in good legal standing except for their undocumented status.
The move seemed to make sense - for Metro State, for the students and for our State.
But, on June 19th the Attorney General weighed in with his legal opinion that Metro State's new tuition rate was illegal because it would offer a public benefit to undocumented students which is illegal based of State and Federal law.
Yesterday, Metro State's President Dr. Jordan went in front of the Joint Budget Committee (you can hear the one hour hearing here) and stated that his legal team will take the AG's opinion into consideration but believe they were on sound legal ground to create the new non-resident tuition rate. He also stated that he expected the Board of Trustees will meet in a special meeting to review the AG's opinion and re-group.
We will keep you informed about when Metro State will meet so that we can show them our support but in the meantime please go on their facebook page and leave a message of thanks and support.

Then, in the middle of all of this, last Friday President Obama announced that DREAMers will be able to apply for work permits and receive relief from deportation. You can read more about his announcement here. We will bring you more information as the details become available but we encourage you to reach out to our Coalition Partners: Together Colorado, CIRC or Padres y Jovenes Unidos to learn more about President Obama's program and how to participate.

While President Obama's announcement was a great first step we must all continue fighting for the DREAM Act, which would create a path to citizenship and for Colorado ASSET to make higher education affordable across the State.
