FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Catechetical Leader:
It was great to meet so many of you, your catechists, and RCIA teams at last Saturday's Catechetical Forum at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. Bishop Walsh was joined by Deacon James Bello and several concelebrants for the liturgy. As always, Bishop Walsh's homily was inspiring and filled with gratitude to all of you who so joyfully give countless hours to teaching our children, youth and families. A lovely choir from St. Charles parish on Staten Island led us in singing the Lord's praises. MORE

Catechist Formation
Certification & Award Ceremony scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5
Come join your catechists as they reap the harvest of their many hours of study and reflection. More than 350 catechists this year have earned certification at levels one, two, three or four. These volunteers have given themselves wholeheartedly to handing on the faith in parish religious education programs and the Catechumenate (RCIA).
At the same ceremony, the Catechetical Office will honor Sr. Kevin John Shields, OP, regional director for Sullivan/Orange; along with Frank Sadlier Dinger and William Sadlier Dinger of Sadlier Publishers; Mario J. Paredes, KGCHS, presidential liaison for Catholic ministries at the American Bible Society; Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers; and Bishop Gerald Walsh, vicar for clergy, who also will preside at the ceremony. A reception will follow.
If you plan to attend, be sure to email Sr. Nancy Doran, SSC, who is organizing the ceremony.

An "app" is short for application.  An application is a synonym for a software program.  Typically it refers to software used on a Smartphone or mobile device such as the Android, iPhone, BlackBerry or iPad, as in "mobile app" or "iphone app."  Why are apps important?  Because the way that people access content on the Internet has changed.  People use their smartphones to access the Internet more than they use their desktop or laptop computers.  In addition, 77% of adults have smartphones and that number is growing (by the way, the percentage of Smartphone use is greater among youth and young adults).  The average American accesses apps and mobile sites about 150 times a day.

In response to this changing landscape, the Catechetical Office has developed an app called Catechetical.  Catechetical supports the ministry of the catechetical leaders of the parish religious education programs and RCIA in the Archdiocese of New York. By using this app, you can connect to resources, training opportunities, reflections and receive updates and notifications of breaking news. There is also an area for catechists. The app is free.  To download it, go to http://goo.gl/S7A04B.  We believe you will find it handy and useful!

The Best Antidote to Violence
By Sr. Patricia McCarthy, CND
Columnist, Rhode Island Catholic

The day after the Las Vegas shooting a first grader came to school with a few pages, carefully printed in the best first grade script she could manage. On the first page she had written, "Guns are not toys. I do not play with toy guns." And she had her picture attached to it. On the second page was written "Kids don't let kids play with guns." The third page was a request for a toy gun turn in at her school. More
