Catholics on Call July 2013 Newsletter

Greetings!

As you can tell from our slightly shortened Partner Calendar, things are slowing down for the summer everywhere. Everywhere, except the Catholics on Call office. Here at CTU we are getting ready to welcome more than 40 young men and women for our annual young adult conference from August 6-10.

In their application our participants are asked to describe how they envision using their gifts and skills in ministry. And if you ever worry about the future of Church ministry, you should read their answers. Here are some of them:
  • My strongest desire is to serve others in whatever ways they need.
  • I believe myself to be a very good communicator, both providing reassurance to those in need as well as simply listening when others need to share.
  • I can see myself doing wonderful things to teach the young people about God but also helping realize the relationship they could have with God as they get older.
  • I have deep concerns for peace in the world and I think my life would be best spent towards that end.

At this point, I would like to thank all of our partners for recommending such a great group of young adults and for calling them forth to be leaders in our communities and serve the Church.

Have a blessed summer and happy 4th of July!

Scripture Reflection: Following Christ - A Reason to Rejoice?

cactus in bloom These readings start out in a celebratory manner.  The first word spoken by the Lord in Isaiah is "Rejoice!"  The Lord promises every good thing to his people. The chorus of the Psalm focuses on joy - the praise of the Lord.  Even the reading from Galatians has a certain elation to it: "Let me boast... in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ."  Then the Gospel hits us: laborers are few; you are like sheep among wolves; shake the dust from your feet; remember Sodom and Gomorrah.  Jesus realizes what he is asking his disciples to do.  Take nothing with you: no contingency plans, no back-up supplies.

Reflections on Call: Living with a Grateful Heart

journal writing So it's July and after six months I am still sticking to my New Year's resolution! An exciting first for me since usually failure strikes by mid-February when my attempts to get the gym everyday or not eat so much junk food start to crumble. This year my goal has been to keep a gratitude journal.  The idea was to compile a list of 1000 things that I am grateful for over the course of the year.
