It's one of our favorite weekends of the year - Earth Day and the Piedmont Farm Tour!  Celebrate Mother Earth at the Market and learn ways to protect the planet. The following groups will be on the Market Lawn from 8 am-noon to answer your questions:  NC WARN,   Don't Waste Durham,   Habitat ReStore,  and  Food FWD. Bring your kids to this family-friendly event and leave with an even deeper knowledge of sustainability and protecting our environment. We're so excited to celebrate with you this weekend!

Also, you can pick up your button for Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's 22nd Annual Farm Tour at the Market. On Saturday and Sunday, you'll have the chance to visit more than 35 farms in the Triad area, including many vendors from the Durham Farmers' Market. Stop by the Market's Info Table for a brochure or to pick up your button. This is an event you don't want to miss and is a great way to learn about sustainable growing practices in the Triad area.

Finally, we're excited to announce that we've partnered with Durham Central Park and Food FWD to offer a compost drop-off service at the Market.  The cost for subscribers is $15/month and a collection bin and liners are provided. Subscribers will bring their food scraps to the Market or to Durham Central Park each week and drop everything off at the cart, which will be located near the dumpster on Roney Street. Food FWD  will do a compost giveaway semi-annually and will be at the Market this weekend to answer questions and register folks for the program. We hope you'll participate!

See you tomorrow!

Bluebird Meadows
Things are really rolling here on the farm now that we've hit steady warmer weather! Our vegetables are really coming on now; we should have beets, lettuce, spinach, turnips, radishes, kale, and strawberries at market  this Saturday . For flowers we will have the first of our baptisia, a rainbow of snapdragons, the last of our icelandic poppies, batchelor buttons, stock, and lots and lots of mixed bouquets. Our naturally grown flowers make great gifts if you need to bring someone some cheer or treat yourself to something special. We hope to see you  Saturday  morning for some of Durham's best community hours!

Alice & Stuart White
Chapel Hill Creamery
We have ripe, creamy Carolina Moon for  Saturday , as well as Dairyland Farmers Cheese and Pheta. The Carolina Moon is similar to a Brie, in the category called "mold ripened" cheese. Made with the traditional method, the outer white mold changes the cheese and enhances the rich flavor and softness over time. It's a good example of SLOW FOOD that is richer in flavor than many industrial type Bries which are made to ship across the ocean without getting too soft or too strong. We try to bring it to you when it is half to fully ripened, and we can pick one out for you. Set this cheese out to warm up and serve as an appetizer or with a mixed green salad for dinner.

Dairyland Farmers Cheese is a fresh, slightly tart cheese, popular with kids of all ages. It's good for snacking or melting. Our Pheta is aged in a salt brine - also a traditional method - and is saltier than the Farmers cheese. It has the rich flavor of our wonderful Jersey cows' milk and is great for salads or for topping pasta or greens.

Sausage comes from our whey fed pigs and is made with the hams for a meaty taste. Choose from sage/maple breakfast; mild country breakfast; chorizo; Hot Italian; and bratwurst. Spare ribs and ground pork are also available. Come pick up one of our recipes and taste a sample of our sausage and our cheeses.

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include meads made with fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free.  Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on  Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5pm.

This week we are sampling some of our bold and spicy meads at the Market, ones we think pair well with grilled foods and cookouts. Come try our Wildwood Mead, an oak aged off-dry traditional mead made from a dark, strong NC wildflower honey, then aged 22 months with the last 8 months on French oak; our Ginger Mead, featuring the same dark wildflower honey accented with fresh ginger and a little bit sweeter than Wildwood; and our Spiced Apple Cyser, a popular semi-sweet 'apple pie' mead made from NC apple cider and NC wildflower honey.

We will also have bottles available of our Vanilla Mead (light-bodied, lightly sweet mead made from orange blossom honey, infused with vanilla beans) and Orange Blossom Mead (semi-sweet light bodied traditional made, made with orange blossom honey and aged at least a year
