CD OF THE WEEK
The Capitol Steps
How to Succeed in Congress Without Really Lying
14.97
The laughs are bipartisan as musical comedy troupe, The Capitol Steps, return to "put the mock in democracy". WIth beginnings in 1981 as a group of Senate staffers performing political song parodies at parties, the Steps have become America's most popular political comedy act. They have taken their fun and irreverent musical revues on the road, recorded over 30 albums, and produced a wildly successful series of radio specials. This brand new CD features satirical "guest appearances" by Vladimir Putin, Pope Francis, Harry Reid, Marco Rubio, Mitch McConnell, Kate Middleton, and many more.

LET'S CELEBRATE THE SIMPLE
THINGS IN LIFE!
Hi Everyone
Today I dug out my old sewing machine to run up a few cushion covers for the store, desperately trying to get everything ready for our celebration on Saturday - which I haven't even told you about yet! Four hours later and I'm wondering why I didn't just sew them by hand. Ugh! I'm not doing anything complicated - just straight lines, maybe some zips or a couple of button holes, but my thread keeps snapping for no apparent reason. Yes, I've checked the tension, I've rewound the spool, and even dismantled the spool casing to see if there might be some foreign body interfering with the mechanism. I've had to take a break for my sanity... and to write this!
It's not been our week for modern technology.
On Monday we spent about half an hour wondering why the register receipt printer wouldn't work, finally giving in and ringing our expert in Berkeley only to find out it just needed a new roll of paper!
On Tuesday we arrived at the store to find no phones, internet or inventory computers working. Two hours later, with the help of two AT&T men we discovered a fuse switch had tripped. After power was restored we had the computers up and running, but the phones just wanted to hiss and roar instead of giving a dialling tone. The men performed some bypass surgery on the wiring to enable us to use one line but that now means if you ring when we are on the phone it won't switch to our other line and you'll probably get the engaged tone. We are hoping to sort this out soon.
Thank goodness books don't rely on anything electrical or mechanical or magical. So let's just celebrate that fact this Saturday, September 6th when the Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon at 12 noon and we officially invite you into the new look Orinda Books. We're giving a 10% discount off all full-priced books and CDs all day, there'll be lucky dips, goody bags and cup cakes! What could be simpler?!
Hope you can make it.
best wishes,
Maria, and all the (very patient) staff at Orinda Books.
