Caravaggio was the original bad boy of art: a street fighting hustler, a drunk and an arrogant womaniser… punk before punk was punk. Yet, he remains one of the most influential painters in the history of art.

Born Michelangelo Merisi, he added the name Caravaggio from his hometown of Caravaggio, Italy. His distinctive paintings combine a realistic and even gritty observation of the human condition, both physical and emotional, combined with a dramatic use of lighting (chiaroscuro). His work had a formative influence on Baroque Style and in the work of Peter Paul Rubens, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Rembrandt; these and other artists heavily under Caravaggio's influence were called the "Caravaggisti" or "Caravagesques", as well as tenebrists or tenebrosi ("shadowists").
Michelangelo Carravaggio lived from September 29, 1571 to July 18, 1610
