November 15, 2016
Dear Supporters and Friends,

Graduation and End of Year Ceremonies took place in July and the new school term began in mid-August which means we have lots of news to cover in this issue.

One behalf of the students, director and faculty, we would like to thank donors, organizations, volunteers, and all those who continue to give to the "Friends of EEE" program, ....thank you all, for your continued support and generosity!

Celebrating Day of the Dead Week 2016 with Cupertino & Hayward Calif. Rotary Clubs

We wish of offer our sincere thanks to our Rotary friends who visited EEE to share and help celebrate one of the most interesting and exciting holidays on the Mexican calendar, Dia de Muertos.

During their week long visit to San Miguel they were hosted in the homes of friends of the school, many took part in the Catrina parade (with three young women from EEE helping do the makeup), learned much about Mexican Day of the Dead history and traditions, visited and were entertained in the homes of San Miguel families, toured an authentic Hacienda in the rural countryside, visited Charlie Hall's candle and glass etching factory in Atotonilco, took a cooking class and a trip to the pyramids and were wined and dined and serenaded by Mariachis, at several local restaurants. Whew! And there was more....shopping, singing, attending the Midday Rotary meeting, and on and on....We were especially honored to have the group visit EEE where they met and spent some time with the students, director, teachers and staff.

Our Rotary friends showed an enthusiastic interest in the Vocational Training Programs which their clubs generously supported by leading an important Rotary Global Grant. Cheers for Rotary! Thank you, Dear Friends, for all your support and generosity, you will always be welcome to visit us in San Miguel de Allende.

Carpentry students proudly demonstrate their handiwork, some of the designs were created by them personally.

All students prepared and performed a skit about the history and traditions of Dia de Muertos for our Rotary friends.

Graduation and End of Year Ceremonies means Happiness and Celebration!

Congratulations to all EEE students for a successful year of academic studies! All of the older students continue to advance in their levels. Our director, Fabiola and all the teachers, Jauniz, Miguel, Ceci and Carla are super proud of their students' achievements!

Special recognition is bestowed on Rafael who graduated to high school and is  the proud recipient of the Doris A. Tolpen Memorial Scholarship.

He joins Azucena and Laura in Preparatoria classes.  Well done Rafa!

Eric's Story
Eric lives with his mother and younger sister in Dolores Hidalgo, a town 25 miles away from San Miguel and EEE, the only school for the special education of deaf children in the State of Guanajuato. His father wishes for nothing more than to bring his young son to a school where he can learn Mexican Sign Language. At EEE his son will also have the opportunity to learn to read and write and to be part of a class with other deaf children his own age.

The Challenge
At such a young age Eric must rely on his family to bring him to school and his family does not have the financial means to bring him by bus on a regular basis. The cost of two bus fares, twice a day, three days per week or approximately US$80 per month is prohibitive for Eric's family.

A Solution
We intend to help Eric's father to purchase the bus tickets necessary to accompany his young son to school and home again during the school term. We hope to empower Eric's father to eventually earn the funds necessary to help with the transportation costs himself by working in San Miguel during the time Eric is in preschool at EEE.

Long-Term Impact
We estimate that there are approximately 100 other deaf children in the area, just like Eric, who have not had the opportunity to receive of an education in Mexican Sign Language. We ask ourselves, how can Eric receive a meaningful education with teachers who have no sign language training? We see it far too many times, deaf children languishing virtually untaught in public school classrooms. With access to special education Eric and others like him will grow to become literate, independent, and productive citizens who set and achieve life goals.

Thank you Friends for your past and future support.
