Calaveras from West Ottawa
High School
October 15 - November 30

Artists and students of Nathan Kukla and Brent Jackson from West Ottawa High School are celebrating life by creating calaveras based on the work of Jose Guadaupe Posada.
The calaveras often depicted scenes of everyday life and include skeletal figures to remind us to appreciate life. Using traditional illustration and printmaking techniques these modern images take on new life as shadowboxes and prints.

When the Holland Area Arts Council was just beginning, -- before we even had a building -- the organization leaders started a newsletter called Artline. In the spirit of our rich history, the Arts Council's new blog is titled Artline

Here you'll find more information about the art world -- artists, mediums and exhibitions. We'll be your line to art.

Know More Art Challenge

On Saturday, August 9 the No More Art campaign shifted slogans to Know More Art as residents were challenged to engage in the arts in a new way and share their story through the Know More Art website.

Visit the website to learn more, learn more about this month's challenge and participate.

The first challenge is from the Holland Area Arts Council:

Step 1. If you type "Andrew Goldsworthy" into a Google image search you'll see beautifully designed sculptures and installations in nature. You won't be surprised to hear that Goldsworthy is known for using elements of his natural surroundings to create art.

With Goldsworthy in mind, we challenge you to take elements of your own surroundings to create something beautiful. Art doesn't have to come from expensive supplies. Use kitchen utensils, food, material from your workplace, nature, anything you can find! Imagine a character made of food, a laundry installation in your living room or an arch formed with wine corks. You have your surroundings and your imagination - be creative!

Step 2. Once you've created your design, sculpture or installation, take a photo and follow this link to share with us. All the photos and stories will be posted on the Know More Art Facebook page, and some will also be featured in the Arts Council's e-newsletter and other media outlets.

Step 3. Like the Know More Art Facebook page to see your photo featured. Then tell all your friends to Like the page and your photo*. The art with the most Likes on September 30 at noon will receive a prize. The Arts Council will also pick a winner. Two ways to win: the Arts Council's selection and the Viewer's Choice via Facebook. *Remember to remind Facebook friends to like the original photo and not just the "shared" photo.

Step 4. Visit the website again to participate in the next challenge, see images of entries, view winning images and get ideas!
