Check out what they had to say!
A Frame Above & 180 Chic Boutique
Owner: Wendy Clifton

What is my most satisfying moment in business?

We believe that "every framing tells a story". We have told thousands in the 14 years we have been in business. It makes us know we have been successful when our framing clients pick up their "stories" we have framed and they have tears or are so surprised by how it is framed even though we had a consultation on how it would be framed.

We are also very satisfied when we are told the direction we have gone in adding 180 Chic Boutique to our name is the right one. Reminding the Jackson community of boutiques in Chicago, Up north or on the west side of the state along Lake Michigan. We know we are heading to become and continue to be a valuable asset to downtown Jackson.

Anderson Printing & Mailing,
Creative Promotions of Jackson
Owner: Carolyn Mattson

How important have good employees been to your success?

Paramount!  My press operator has been with the company, almost since it started.  The business was founded in 1969 and he has been here since 1976, celebrating 40 years in November!  Everyone who works for me cares deeply about the work we do.  We strive for excellent customer service and helping to make our customers lives a little easier.  There is no doubt in my mind, a lot of my success can be directly attributed to having amazing staff.  Their dedication allows me to be more involved in the community.  I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Jackson for more than 13 years and currently serve as the Treasurer of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce.

Beads to Live By
Owner: Cassandra Spicer

What three pieces of advice would you give to college students who want to become entrepreneurs?

1) Do not feel like you have to complete an undergrad program at a University. College is expensive, and if you work for awhile, you can save some money and gain invaluable experience as well as potentially figuring out what you would be interested in doing long term.  - At the very least, work while you are in school and look for jobs that have some relationship to the field you are interested in.

2) Be realistic with your plan.  What I mean by that is when I was in school, I didn't have any real intentions of leaving the area I grew up in. Yet the jobs I thought I was training for were not readily available there and when they were, not at nearly as high of a pay rate as the national averages. So make sure you are seeking out information for areas that you want to live in.

3) Everything happens for a reason. If you are working your hardest and do what you believe to be right, everything else will always fall into place.  In those moments when it feels incredibly hard or confusing just remember, it may just be a necessary transition into something you were made for.

The Crazy Cowboy
co-owner: Kim Gamez
Their dream was to one day run their own restaurant.  The dream became a reality when Hugo moved to Jackson, MI. He met his future wife Kim. Kim’s father owned a real-estate company and he presented Hugo with the opportunity that changed everything.
After hearing of Hugo’s love for cooking and his desire to have his own restaurant, Kim’s father
told them of a property that was available in the downtown area. With the encouraging words,  “Here’s your opportunity to fulfill your family’s dream,” it began. The Crazy Cowboy opened its  doors in March of 2003.

Gilbert Chocolates
Owner: Sally Krichbaum

What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?

The greatest sacrifice I have had to make has involved the loss of “down” time. As much as I enjoy owning Gilbert Chocolates, Christmas and Thanksgiving celebrations will never be the same as before we owned a retail business. Now the holiday season passes by in a blur. Our kids are young adults, so for the past three years we have celebrated Christmas several days after the actual holiday, just so we can enjoy it. Since I end up working 12 hour days away from home, I gave my dog to my daughter; and my goodness, I miss having a dog greet me at the door when I do finally come home! O
wning Gilbert Chocolates is worth the sacrifice of “down” time. It is fun to sell chocolate and it is fun to watch people enjoy the products we make. Probably the most satisfying thing about owning Gilbert Chocolates is that my husband and I do it together which makes it special.

A little known fact about Night Light

The Pickle Barrel Deli
co-owner: Sharon Collins
What ignited the spark in you to start a new business venture?

The spark for Pickle Barrel came about when we started identifying community needs and wanting to be apart of the downtown revitalization. People were interested in more Michigan based products. Pickle Barrel Deli teamed up with Zingerman's bringing their popular Ann Arbor products to Jackson and then creating an atmosphere that would be both attractive and comfortable. Once the Pickle Barrel Deli was established it was very important to us to continue support for other local small businesses, such as the European Bakery, and to be on a first name basis with our customers. This adds to our comfortable atmosphere and enriches experiences within the community.
