June 2017 Newsletter
Junior Achievement of Central Florida

empowering young people to own their economic success

From the President:
It is hard to believe another school year is over. I want
to take this opportunity to thank all of the incredible volunteers who helped us reach over 43,000 students this year. Another thank you goes to our JACF Board Members. We could not have done this without their service and support.

Do you remember what it was like when you faced the world and started on the path to achieve your dreams?  How much easier would it have been if you had the opportunity to learn about financial literacy and entrepreneurship early in your life? Your work, whether you are an individual or corporate leader, makes a difference in our community.

Thank you for continuing to empower dreams!

Kathy Panter
President

Imagine yourself in third grade. You can't speak
English fluently, yet you are in an English-only
school. Classmates tease you because you struggle
to pronounce words correctly. Would you go home
and cry every day? Would you give up because you can't imagine a future that holds success?

Astride, the current Valedictorian of the 2017 graduates of Oak Ridge High School, also a JA Academy for Leadership & Entrepreneurship student, did go home and cry. Yet, she found a way to get through challenges to excel. She did not do it alone (no one really becomes a success without the help of others). However, she did it . It is time to celebrate her hard work and success, and the success of all of our JA Academy students. It is time to remember that there are a lot more children like Astride out there looking for a helping hand. Help Junior Achievement continue to break the ties of generational poverty and build a stronger America.

Last week we celebrated the 2017 graduation from the JA Academy for Leadership &
Entrepreneurship. This second graduation class of high achievers can claim many bragging rights.
  • Ninety percent (89 of 99) of the 2017 were accepted to college.
  • Seventeen students were in the top twenty graduates (out of 600) at Oak Ridge High School. All of the top five were from the Academy.
  • Scholarships totaling over $3.3 million dollars were granted to this year's graduating class.
  • Schools from which full scholarships were awarded include Rollins College, Florida State University, Stetson University, University of Kentucky, University of Central Florida and University of Florida.
  • Six students received Oak Ridge High School "Above & Beyond" Scholarships sponsored by a group of business owners through the Foundation for Orange County Public Schools.

Did you know Junior Achievement of Central Florida, with the help of 2,700 volunteers, reached 43,000 students in the Central Florida area this school year?

We're just like you. We're teachers, business executives, parents, retirees, students...you name it. But the one thing we all have in common is our dedication to change. And the more volunteers we have, the bigger impact we can all make.
