NEWSWORTHY
19 th Annual William A. Barkan Memorial High School Basketball Shootout

The 19 th Annual William A. Barkan Memorial Shootout was held at the JCC of Greater Columbus on June 12 - 14. Eight teams from area high schools participated in this year’s tournament including Eastmoor High School, Briggs High School, Marion Franklin High School, Centennial, Independence, South High School, Bishop Hartley, and Groveport.

The tournament and scholarship fund is named in honor of Billy Barkan, a long time JCC member who loved basketball. Through its special 19 years of service, this program has touched over 1,000 teenagers through basketball. Funds raised enable many teenagers to participate at no cost. The tournament gives the student athletes another outlet in the summer to continue to develop their craft in a nurturing environment. In addition, sponsorships for the Memorial Shootout have added two major additions for JCC Youth Sports use: an outdoor sport court and two indoor batting cages.

Tournament winners:

First Place:
South High School (pictured left)
Second Place:
Eastmoor High School (pictured right)

The Barkan Family and the JCC would like to express their appreciation to all the teams and sponsors. Their participation and generous donations helped make this tournament a success! For more information on this program please contact Jeanna Brownlee, JCC Director of Sports and Wellness, at (614) 559-6274.
