Daily prompts and exercises will launch you into in-depth discussions about plot, character development,
setting, and the other elements of strong narrative prose.
The writing you'll produce will be grounded in the stuff of real life; you'll carve stories from your personal experiences, your own
history, and your imagination.
This class will sharpen your critiquing skills, help make you
a better reader and editor, and push you to produce your best creative writing yet.

Writing at Explorations
Writing True: Journalism

While print journalism is facing the challenge of keeping up with the digital age, there is still a big demand for people with integrity who find the stories, do the background research, provide a balanced view and document the events of our time.

Learn a creative approach to journalism

with Jen Graves at Explorations.

Here's what she has in mind:

"Each student will work with a single object for the entire week. This object might be that sign over the cavelike concrete bunker that reads "AMOS STODDARD." Who on earth was Amos Stoddard? Who hung this sign, and when? What happened here? And what happened to Amos? Over the course of the week, each student will write 10 different true stories about their object. Each story will take a different form-let's say one is an encyclopedia entry in the authoritative voice, another is a poem (what is a "nonfiction" poem?), a third is the perfect Tweet, a fourth is a first-person account, a fifth is a Q&A in which the object "speaks" for itself, a sixth is a personality profile, and so on. Each truth we tell will be like an editing of the last, and we'll do plenty of self-editing (which is really just active writing, and is actually fun, not painful, I promise). How far can you go with creativity when you're bounded by the truth? Muuuuuch farther than you think. "

Registration is open for Explorations until February 25, 2013

Water: A World of Wonder

From April 28-May 3, 2013 at Centrum's Water World, Fort Worden State Park becomes a marine science lab for Washington State 5th and 6th graders. Students come in groups of 4-6 with a chaperone who is either an interested parent or a teacher from their school.

The week includes a study of marine life from the smallest plankton, to invertebrates (in the Port Townsend Marine Science Center's touch tanks), to the largest marine mammals such as orcas and gray whales. The science learning is infused with creative writing and movement as well as visual art. The program is a hands-on, feet first discovery project.
