Muskegon Certified As Redevelopment Ready
Certified Redevelopment Ready Community
The City of Muskegon recently received certification from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) as a "Redevelopment Ready Community". To receive certification, the city had to have a comprehensive community marketing strategy, clear-cut zoning regulations, community involvement plan, a pain-free development process and property available for development.

With the certification, the city designates "shovel ready" redevelopment sites to be marketed by the MEDC. The Morris Ave. lot and the Hartshorn Marina lot are being marketed regionally in one of MEDC's publications. Click here to view the redevelopment ready communities guide.

Muskegon is the seventh city in the state to be certified as Redevelopment Ready and the first on the Great Lakes Shoreline.
  Housing Developments
Heritage Square Townhomes
There are currently over $1 billion of developments along the Muskegon Lakeshore. Among all the developments underway or in planning there are millions of dollars in housing investments being made.

A few include:

β€œWith housing supply at a historical low, it is exciting to see all the new developments on the horizon,” says Tom Sanocki, CORE Realty. β€œIt will be great to offer prospective buyers even more opportunities for living along the lakeshore.”

  New Owners, Buildings and Businesses
The Harvey St. corridor has become a regional shopping center with continued growth and expansion. Below is a list of a few major developments either underway or in the planning phase.
  • The Lakes Mall was purchased by Namdar Reality Group. They are also welcoming back popular holiday stores The Glove Apparel and Go! Games and Calendars. They will be at 99% occupancy heading into the holiday season.
  • There have been multiple new businesses opening up locations on the corridor. A few include Harvey Street Marketplace, HomeTown Pharmacy, East of Chicago Pizza, Subaru of Muskegon and Art Van PureSleep.
  • A Home Goods is currently being constructed inside the Lakeshore Marketplace.
  • In front of the Mercy Health Lakes Campus, there has been recent approval for a 40,000 square foot cancer center.
  • The former Johnny Carinos restaurant has been purchased and is getting ready for redevelopment.
  • Harvey St. from Sternberg to Hile will be widened to 5 lanes in the spring of 2017.
  • In efforts to beautify the corridor, there have been sidewalks put in along the western side of the road. This allows for safer traveling for pedestrians.
