Temple Emanuel - Conference Room

Photographs are all around us, yet there is very little sense of visual literacy, particularly outside of artists' circles. This 4-part course, taught by Bill Aron, will teach us not only how to recognize the elements of an impactful photograph, but also how to make a photograph that is even more interesting than the object being photographed. We will apply these principles to photographing life around us.

Live-Streamed National Village Celebration

What’s an Ideal Day for You?
by Ellen Isaacs

In late September, over 7,000 village members around the world representing 174 villages tuned in to a livestream video interview of Dr. Atul Gawande. The event celebrated the birth of our national village movement 15 years ago when Beacon Hill neighbors formed the first village in Boston. Eighty ChaiVillageLA members and guests joined in to hear the renowned surgeon, public health researcher and writer for The New Yorker  as he described the new culture we must co-create in which people advocate for their wishes and the medical profession evolves into a more compassionate and collaborative relationship with older adults.

How to Advocate for Your Health
by Barbara Joyner
Whenever I attend an education program I make it a point to walk out with at least one idea I can immediately implement. The talk that Ilan Tamir, MD presented to ChaiVillageLA members on Tuesday morning, entitled, "How to Advocate for Your Health" left me with many such ideas. Dr. Tamir emphasized how to relay the most important information to your healthcare practitioner in a quick and concise way. Although there are many "take aways" from the talk, I loved the suggestion that we make a list of the medications we take (including dosages and frequency) and keep it next to our driver’s license or ID. On the back write emergency contacts and phone numbers. At a medical appointment you can easily refer to the note, but MORE IMPORTANTLY, if you are ever found down on the ground and are unable to communicate, the person who comes to your aid will have health and contact information.

Thank you, Dr. Tamir, for the excellent presentation, and Susan Tamir for coordinating this important talk for ChaiVillageLA.

OUR MISSION
The vast majority of adults want to remain in their homes and neighborhoods as they get older, but sometimes this takes a supportive community. ChaiVillageLA is a vibrant, multi-synagogue, multi-generational community that enables congregants to age in place in their own homes by providing assistance to one another and enriching each other’s lives, as part of a self-governing village supported by Jewish values.
