Our Immigrant Members Reflect on Thanksgiving:
|
|
When I was thirteen years old my family and I arrived in the US from Shanghai. We settled in San Francisco. I remember that for our first Thanksgiving my father read up all he could about cooking a turkey. When he roasted the turkey he used muslin cloth. I was so surprised. I had never seen anything like that before! -
Bill Hant
In an early year of WWII, neighbors of ours in Fresno (where we were living at the time) invited our family to join them for Thanksgiving dinner since it was a holiday we were not familiar with. It was a typical, wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the trimmings. We carefully avoided the ham, but thoroughly enjoyed the festive dinner. We especially enjoyed meeting the soldiers and airmen (in uniform) who were invited from a nearby military base. It was very exciting and we continued the tradition for every year thereafter. -
Paul Altura
As an immigrant, Thanksgiving is a time when I really take a moment to appreciate the wonderful things this country has given me. It was the first holiday I got to put my unique stamp on. When I became a parent and an American citizen, I fully embraced Thanksgiving. It was the time of year that the kids planned the menu and cooked most of the food, resulting in an untraditional Thanksgiving meal designed to take vegans, vegetarians, celiacs, and people who keep kosher into consideration. We feast on things like Korean BBQ ribs, salmon, and cauliflower. The kids think about what they are going to cook for weeks in advance, and all Farrell and I have to do is the shopping, most of the cleaning up, and a lot of eating. Thanksgiving is a time when anyone who doesn’t have anywhere to go is invited to join us for our messy, delicious, Thanksgiving meal. -
