We are delighted to welcome Kelsey Fong to the ChaiVillageLA staff as our new Communications Coordinator!
Kelsey just graduated from USC where she studied Sociology and Web Technologies. Immediately after graduation, she and her sister travelled for two weeks to London, Scotland and Madrid. Kelsey is a Los Angeles native, growing up just a few miles from Dodger Stadium. Since middle school, Kelsey has enjoyed volunteering for various nonprofits such as Project Angel Food and Inner City Arts. She also is a friendly visitor for an elderly man through ElderWise.
Kelsey plans to become a paralegal, serving the older population. After her first day, Kelsey said, “I’m so happy to be a part of this community program that allows me to pursue my interest in social justice.”
In her free time, Kelsey loves hanging out with her 95 pound German Shepherd, cooking with her mom and taking photographs of LA’s beautiful sky.

ChaiVillageLA’s Shake-Out
By Eileen Dardick
The “shake out” earthquake preparedness event was an excellent review for those who had been through the procedures to follow in the event of an earthquake before, and an awakening for those new to the drill. We learned not only what to have on hand in case of any emergency, but also what steps to follow in order to keep ourselves and others safe during a disaster. One of the things that is so important is that we continue to practice these techniques over and over again so that they stay fresh in our minds and so that they are not just sitting on the back burner getting stale. We must also replenish our supplies so that they stay fresh and are able to be used in a timely manner.

UCLA Memory Training
By Susan Tamir
ChaiVillageLA's first health promotion class, sponsored by the Partners in Care Foundation began on May 25 and was very well received by the twenty participants who attended. It was inspiring and fun, giving members an opportunity to discuss their concerns and to laugh about the problems remembering names of new people they meet and even sometimes of family members. We discussed whether we are really diminishing in memory or if we are just more aware and concerned about it. Interesting! Maybe we just have more time to worry about our memory lapses? But there are things we are learning to improve our skills, and we are gaining information about what is normal and what we should really be concerned about.

Film Interest Group
By Susan Lava
I attended my first film group discussion last week. The immigration theme is certainly timely and the films chosen were great examples of the theme. Although A Better Life was not as creative or as well written as The Visitor, our discussion was fascinating. Many thanks to our hosts, Bobbie and Ben Allen.

Paul Simon Exhibit at the Skirball
By Susan Levine
“Still Crazy After All These Years” is the top selling tee shirt in the Skirball’s gift shop history, a salute to their current exhibit, Paul Simon: Words and Music. A group of Villagers spent part of the afternoon exploring the richness of Simon’s music, learning about his early days with Art Garfunkel, and his later years as a solo performer. We learned about the influences of the sounds of other cultures on his work, and left with a deep appreciation of his accomplishments. A visit to the Music Lab where you can sing harmony with Paul Simon’s songs, or add your own interpretation of the percussion is a must!

This discussion group focuses on the news of the week. Participants share articles and opinions that pertain to what's happening both in the United States and Internationally, and particularly to introduce diverse views. Many of the "pundits" we analyze write for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. You will also examine such magazines as The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New Republic and other journals that give in-depth coverage of current topics. This is your chance to listen and be heard on the events of the day.
The class is taught by Village member, Myrna Hant. Myrna received her PhD in Higher Education from UCLA. She was a college administrator as well as an instructor in Women's Studies at Chapman University.

Don’t miss this ***amazing*** opportunity to learn with village member, Dr. Ruth Weisberg.
She is an artist, Professor of Fine Arts, and former Dean of the Roski School of Art & Design at USC. Dr. Weisberg also directs USC’s Initiative for Israeli Arts and Humanities. Her work is included in sixty major museums, among them the Metropolitan, the Whitney, and the Art Institute of Chicago and she is the recipient of numerous awards.
NOTE: This is the first in a series of 3 classes: June 13, July 6, and August 1. Please register for each class separately.
Our focus will be on drawing based on observation. We will learn to see in a new way. We will begin with building skills for the depiction of contours, volumes, and shading. We will investigate how light affects form and how this can be captured to create illusionistic representations of objects in space. Continuing emphasis on shading and mark-making techniques will take place through the exploration of the human form.
Dr. Weisberg will bring art materials which will cost about $25 per person, payable at the first class. Additionally, there will be the opportunity to draw using a live model during the second class and this will cost approximately $3 to $5 per person, depending upon the number enrolled.
