Education Connection - Union Hill Elementary

young-boy-reading.jpg
RR Christian Church started working last year with Union Hill Elementary as Literacy Partners. It involves reading to second graders, is a wonderful program and only takes about an hour of time per week. We currently have 5 volunteers and would love to have lots more!

If you sign up, you will be assigned 2 students, and you will go to Union Hill and read to and with each student for 15 minutes, for a total of 30 minutes.  You must fill out two applications, one for RRISD and one for the Education Connection:

If you have any questions, please feel free to visit with Janette Johnston, Literacy Partner Coordinator, or one of our Literacy Partners, Susan Kessler, Tricia Mouser or Gayle Boles. There is also lots of history and information on the Education Connection website. The program only started in RR year before last with 2 schools. I think there were about 6 RR schools last year, and 8 more are being added this year. The program is really growing and needs lots of help.

Training is required and dates are as listed below.  If you cannot attend either of these trainings, online training will also be made available.  RRISD Literacy Partner Training:

Let Us Run With Perseverance The Race That Is Set Before Us

One of the ways I sometimes encourage myself before exercising is to watch an inspiring athletic event on YouTube. The women's 4 x 100 meter relay final from the 2012 London Olympics is among my favorites. In that race, Tianna Madison, Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight, and Carmelita Jeter ran to a world record in 40.82 seconds. The talent, speed, grace, baton-passing, and determination all combine for an inspiring race. And the icing on the cake for me when I watch the video is the British announcer's surprise about the Americans' margin of victory. He had been hyping the strength of the Jamaican team before the starting gun went off.

Having watched this video numerous times, I found myself rather pumped up about this same race in Rio. Madison (now Bartoletta) and Felix again ran the first two legs. English Gardner and Tori Bowie finished it. The Americans again struck gold, just 0.19 seconds slower than their own world record from London. What nobody (except the team and coach) knew until after the race was that Gardner had to use an extra pair of shoes from Felix in order to compete. With only 10 minutes before the race, Gardner discovered just one shoe in her bag. Fortunately, Felix had an extra pair in her bag. Though they were a half size too big, Gardner fixed that with an extra pair of socks. The result was gold.

This story brings to mind the city (Marshalltown, Iowa) track meet I participated in during 8 th grade. If memory serves me correctly, I had already competed in the mile run and recorded a PR (personal record), but finished nowhere near the top runners. I was sitting on the grass in the infield of the track, taking my spikes off, when a teammate approached me about borrowing my spikes for an upcoming race. I gladly let him use them. He was one of our top sprinters, though he didn't own a pair of spiked shoes.

What a joy it was to watch him cross the finish line of the 100 yard dash in first place, beating the top runners of the other two junior high schools in town. But when he returned the spikes to me, the toes were completely ripped through. They were ruined. I guess his feet were significantly larger than mine! My parents weren't too thrilled that the shoes they'd paid quite a bit for were now unusable. I don't remember whether or not we replaced them. I think I just ran in regular tennis shoes for the rest of the season. But what I definitely remember was watching with delight my friend Richard win that sprint wearing some fine-looking yellow suede track spikes.

In our own race of life, unexpected events cause us to improvise. We learn to expect the unexpected. As followers of Jesus Christ, we can face the unexpected with faith, trust, confidence, and peace.  Ours is a God of steadfast love, who sees the big picture and has plans for us that are good and full of hope.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1 (NRSV)

Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mitch

Elders Prayer Corner/Closing Message

I will be still, and I will behold in my dwelling place ( Isaiah 18:4, RV)

Assyria was marching against Ethiopia, the people of which are described as tall and smooth. And as the armies advance, God makes no effort to arrest them; it seems as though they will be allowed to work their will. He is still watching them from His dwelling place, the sun still shines on them; but before the harvest, the whole of the proud army of Assyria is smitten as easily as when sprigs are cut off by the pruning hook of the husbandman.

Is not this a marvelous conception of God--being still and watching? His stillness is not acquiescence. His silence is not consent. He is only biding His time, and will arise, in the most opportune moment, and when the designs of the wicked seem on the point of success, to overwhelm them with disaster. As we look out on the evil of the world; as we think of the apparent success of wrong-doing; as we wince beneath the oppression of those that hate us, let us remember these marvelous words about God being still and beholding.

There is another side to this. Jesus beheld His disciples toiling at the oars through the stormy night; and watched though unseen, the successive steps of the anguish of Bethany, when Lazarus slowly passed through the stages of mortal sickness, until he succumbed and was borne to the rocky tomb. But He was only waiting the moment when He could interpose most effectually.

Is He still to thee? He is not unobservant; He is beholding all things; He has His finger on thy pulse, keenly sensitive to all its fluctuations. He will come to save thee when the precise moment has arrived.

-- Daily Devotional Commentary

Whatever His questions or His reticence, we may be absolutely sure of an unperplexed and undismayed Savior. - L.B Cowman,

Streams in the Desert

O troubled soul, beneath the rod,
Thy Father speaks, be still, be still;
Learn to be silent unto God,
And let Him mould thee to His will.
O praying soul, be still, be still,
He cannot break His plighted Word;
Sink down into His blessed will,
And wait in patience on the Lord.
O waiting soul, be still, be strong,
And though He tarry, trust and wait;
Doubt not, He will not wait too long,
Fear not, He will not come too late.
