Ruth: From Heartbreak to Hope

(Chapter 2) Working Together to Survive

Naomi and Ruth figure out a plan for their long-term security. Landowners were required to leave part of the harvest in the fields for widows, immigrants, and the poor. Naomi and Ruth are blessed by this expectation, and by the owner of the field, Boaz.
I Invite You to Pray

I am very thankful for the fact that my family and I have health insurance. Though I am relatively healthy for my age, I do take ongoing medication for a couple of chronic conditions. That means I need to have regular doctor appointments (specialists as well) to monitor those conditions and get medication refills. And of course I am increasingly at risk for a variety of health problems as I continue to age.

I've broken five bones over the years. I've also had four surgeries (adenoids/tonsils; adenoids again!; fibula repair with plate and screws; and, at the end of last year, a thyroidectomy). For all the medical professionals who have ever worked with me, I am deeply grateful.

Since 1986 I have been insured through our denomination's plan, with two exceptions. 1. From 2001 to 2004, while living in Japan as a missionary through Global Ministries, our whole family was insured through the Japanese national plan. Even as a non-Japanese, I was included in the family plan and had a very favorable experience with my health care needs there. 2. Since 1/1/2016 our family has found insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act. Our insurer of calendar year 2016 decided to drop out of ACA participation as of the end of last year, so from January 1, 2017 we have yet another new plan--our third in the last three years. Our denomination does not currently offer a health plan.

The health care debate is currently at the forefront of our national political and medical conversations. Some parts of the ACA are quite popular among our citizenry. Other elements are overwhelmingly unpopular. Just about everyone agrees that it is a flawed plan that needs a number of significant changes. There is little agreement on the details of those changes or how to make them, however. In the meantime, our elected leaders argue with one another and the status quo continues.

I invite you to pray: for all who face medical difficulties--physical and mental; for the uninsured; for medical professionals--technicians, scientists, surgeons, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, anesthetists, paramedics, counselors, and others; for health insurance company employees and decision-makers; and for our elected leaders as they work to provide care for their constituents, especially those who are most vulnerable and at risk.

Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mitch
Reverend Terri Hord Owens, General Minister and President of the Disciples of Christ!

As we shared last week, Rev. Owens is the newly elected General Minister and President of the Disciples of Christ!  Here is a short video greeting from Rev. Owens:

You may also read her full biography HERE.  For more information about the search and call process and her election, you can visit the DOC website link HERE.
New Guests Cards

Worshipers will now find new, green-colored cards on the chair backs. These cards are to be filled out by worship guests. They replace the old "Care Connection" cards and give our guests an opportunity to provide contact information, and to indicate whether they are first-time guests, whether they are interested in learning more about membership, and/or would like the pastor to call on them.

The backs of these new cards are blank. They are simply to be used for visitors. Members and visitors alike are encouraged to use the smaller, bright pink "Prayer Request" cards to share their prayer concerns and joys.

The pink cards are to be given to a deacon or to the pastor before worship begins.  They can be found in the welcome center. The new green visitor cards can be found in the chair backs in the sanctuary and are to be placed in the offering plate at the time our tithes and offerings are received.
Fun Packets for Children

The Worship Ministry has provided some pens and paper with a clipboard for children to use during Worship time.  Please encourage them to use the clipboards as a hard surface upon which they can write and draw.  Our Bibles and Hymnals are becoming damaged from being used as a hard surface.

Help us to be good stewards of what God has provided and teach our children the same.  Packets are available in the cabinet at the back of the Sanctuary.

Thank You!

Parking Lot Resurfacing

As you may remember from the Guiding Board announcement a few weeks ago, a generous donor has helped RRCC to complete the parking lot repair with a no interest loan to be paid back beginning in January of 2018.  Because of this generosity, the parking lot repair and resurfacing has been scheduled!

On Monday, July 31st and Tuesday, August 1st, the parking lot of RRCC will be closed.  If you have business to take care of at Church those days, please be prepared to park on the street and walk in only on the sidewalk areas.  Thank you for your patience!  Stop by on Wednesday, August 2nd, if you want to see the completed project!
Quilt Raffle Ticket Sales Are Here!!

Thank you all for your patience as Liz Maybaum began the healing process of her broken foot.  She is up and on the move now, thanks to a scooter, and is able to be at Church to sell tickets for the quilt raffle!

It is queen size quilt and will be auctioned off at the September luncheon!  Tickets will be for sale for $3 each or 7 tickets for $20.

The proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards the mortgage elimination project!
July Food Pantry Focus:  Canned Fruits/Vegetables

"...for I was hungry and you gave me food. Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:35, 40)

This month is "Canned Fruits/Vegetables" at RRCC. Let's load our food pantry tub in the Welcome Center to overflowing each Sunday! Your donations of Canned Fruits/Vegetables (or cash or check designated for the Round Rock Area Serving Center) will help stock empty shelves and feed hungry neighbors in our community.

Let's Celebrate Our Disciples Heritage!  Sunday, July 30th

Thomas Campbell (left) and Alexander Campbell (right)

Alexander Campbell (12 September 1788 - 4 March 1866) was a Scots-Irish immigrant who became an ordained minister in the United States and joined his father Thomas Campbell as a leader of a reform effort that is historically known as the Restoration Movement, and by some as the "Stone-Campbell Movement." Our denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was born out of these movement.

Continuing every 5th Sunday of the month, RRCC will offer special presentations about our denominational identity, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). These presentations will take place in the gym during the Sunday School hour, and all of the adult Sunday School classes are encouraged to attend.

These presentations are intended as a way to learn about the history, structure, theology, and current leadership of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). For some, almost everything that is presented will be new; for others, it will be a 4-times-a-year refresher course. We have two dates left for 2017; they are, July 30th and October 29th.  December 31 is also a 5th Sunday, but there will be no Disciples Heritage presentation on that Sunday, because of the holiday.
Congregational Update Set for August 6th

Our worship service will be shortened slightly on Sunday, August 6th, so that our Guiding Board and Vision Team can have an opportunity to give the congregation a mid-year update. Please plan to remain in the sanctuary for a few minutes following worship so you can receive the latest news regarding the completion of our church's mortgage, facilities improvements, and how we are continuing to be faithful to our mission of "embracing our neighbors with Christ-like love" through our three strategies of WORSHIP, SERVE, and GROW.

What is Faith?
Hebrews 11:1, 6

To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of things we cannot see.  No one can please God without faith; for whoever comes to God must have faith that God exists and rewards those who seek Him.

We choose to have faith in the messages that the prophets, Jesus, and eye-witnesses tell us about God.  God is ever working among us today.  He never changes and continues to work among us and for us daily.  Faith is the major key to the kingdom of God.  Paul believed so strongly that people were healed just by a handkerchief that Paul had touched and was laid out of on the sick.  How strong is our faith?

In the world today faith goes something like this.  "Prove it and I'll believe it."  But God says, "believe it and I will prove it."  We have a choice to make.

Daily we make choices in faith that all will turn out as planned.  When it doesn't our emotions are on edge.  Sometimes we swing into fast action, other problems bring out thoughtful planning, then sometimes there is nothing we can do.  Then we still lean on faith that all will turn out well.  We do not live one day without faith.

The question returns to our choice.  Do we believe Jesus' message or do we believe the worlds?

Prayer:  Holy Father, Thank you for sending truth about you through Jesus.  Help us walk in faith that you will love us always.  We can let go of daily striving and let you guide our path.  We can look to you for all our needs, hopes and dreams.  Amen.
