Let's Celebrate Our Disciples Heritage!

Beginning on April 30th, and continuing every 5th Sunday of the month, RRCC will begin to offer special presentations about our denominational identity, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). These presentations will take place in the gym during the Sunday School hour, and all of the adult Sunday School classes are encouraged to attend.

These presentations are intended as a way to learn about the history, structure, theology, and current leadership of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). For some, almost everything that is presented will be new; for others, it will be a 4-times-a-year refresher course. The classes will be led by RRCC leaders and guests. Here are the dates for 2017:

April 30
July 30
October 29

December 31 is also a 5th Sunday, but there will be no Disciples Heritage presentation on that Sunday, because of the holiday.

John 9:1-25

 "A Muddy, Blessed Sabbath"
The Valley of the Shadow

This Sunday marks the 38th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Israel, which happened on March 26, 1979. The agreement notably made Egypt the first Arab state to officially recognize Israel. The Egypt-Israel treaty was signed by Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, and witnessed by United States president Jimmy Carter.

When Sadat and Begin signed this historic peace agreement, they ended three decades of hostilities between Egypt and Israel and established diplomatic and commercial ties. By the time the agreement was signed, Sadat and Begin and their officials had been working on the details for a couple of years. The Camp David Accords, signed in September of 1978, led to Sadat and Begin being jointly  awarded the 1978 Nobel Prize for Peace

Sadat's peace efforts were not so highly acclaimed in the Arab world-Egypt was suspended from the Arab League, and on October 6, 1981, Muslim extremists assassinated Sadat in Cairo. Nevertheless, the peace process continued without Sadat, and in 1982 Egypt formally established diplomatic relations with Israel.

How sad it is that people who work courageously for peace and justice sometimes lose their lives in the process. President Sadat takes his place among others who were murdered in the midst of their struggle to make our world better--people like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Rev. Deitrich Bonhoeffer, and President Abraham Lincoln.

Hanging over our Lenten journey is the reality that the One we call Lord and Savior was also murdered while dedicating himself to healing and reconciliation. We are on our way to Jerusalem where that will happen. Jesus embodied the steadfast love of our heavenly Father. But the Light of the World would not be welcomed by those who prefer to dwell in the darkness of sin and corruption.

The "valley of the shadow" must be passed through on the road to resurrection joy.  Blessings to you as your continue on the journey.

Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mitch

Flowering of the Cross

small-white-flowers.jpg During the 9:15am Sunrise service on Easter Sunday (April 16th) this year, we will be practicing the "flowering of the cross" along with churches across the country. As part of this custom, each worshiper is invited to pick out a fresh flower from an assortment of lilies, daises, tulips, carnations, or other spring delights, or bring one from your garden at home. Then comes the meaningful moment when each individual approaches the cross and you place your flower upon the cross with reflection and reverence. Eventually the cross will be completely covered with beautiful flowers in a brilliant array of color.  A symbol of death, darkness, pain and hopelessness is transformed into something beautiful, new and alive in celebration of the Resurrection of Christ.

Plan to be a part of this sacred ceremony at the Sunrise service and continuing on until the 11:00 a.m. service begins. Bring your flowers or one will be available at the church.

DWM Creates Birthday Bags For Round Rock Serving Center
Your Assistance Needed

Remember looking forward to a birthday party when you were a child? The joy and excitement of celebrating YOUR DAY was a special occasion. Many children in our community are provided this memorable experience only because the ROUND ROCK SERVING CENTER accepts birthday bags from our congregation and others to distribute to their clients who have a young child with a birthday that month. The ladies of our Disciples Women's Ministries put together bags that include the necessities for a party for eight young children.

Currently to complete eleven bags the following (numbers in parenthesis) packages of at least eight are needed: cake mix (11), napkins 11), desert plates (11), favors -balloons, stickers, etc. (11). The Dollar Store is a great place to pick up these items. Donations should be placed ASAP in the bin in the Welcome Center. Pam Knight heads the birthday bag project for RRCC. Jean Bell coordinates the DWM effort. See Jean for more information or should you wish to make a cash donation she will purchase the specific items needed.
March Mac & Cheese Madness Update!

This Sunday, March 26th, is a "count day" for this round of Mac & Cheese Madness!  Donations were picked up this week by John Claymon, so that our neighbors in need do not have to wait for the food on the shelves.  We did a count however, and those totals will be added to all donations that come in this week with the cutoff Sunday morning at 10:30am.  Here are the current totals:

Disciples Women = 8 boxes
Children & Youth = 24 boxes

Choir = 50 boxes
Guiding Board = 8 boxes

Bring in your donations this week to support your group or divvy it up among all the groups!  Donations will be counted Sunday and the two winners who will advance to the Championship round will be announced during Worship.

Remember, it's all for fun and regardless of the winner, the Serving Center and our neighbors in Round Rock are the true winners!  Good luck everyone!
Free Coffee and Donuts!
No Foolin'!

It may be April Fool's Day, but Round Rock Christian Church really is planning to give away Free Coffee and Donuts! Our Vision Team is spearheading this event for folks in our neighborhood on Saturday morning, April 1st, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. People can walk over to the church, or they can simply drive through our front "loop" in their cars.

This is simply an expression of hospitality from our congregation to the neighborhood we are a part of. It is one way that we are "embracing our neighbors with Christ-like love." If you want to know more and/or are interested in helping, please contact Venessa Harmel at 512-426-0577 or [email protected]
Easter Egg Hunt - Candy and Small Toys/Trinkets Needed!

Thank You, Disciples Men!

At their March meeting the Disciples Men worked on re-covering the Welcome Center chairs that had suffered some tears and damage from use over the years.  The chairs look great, thank you Disciples Men.

The Men also worked to prep the exterior staircase for painting by scrapping and sanding as needed.  Today Jim Kessler and Steve Osteen have been hard at work on painting the staircase.  It looks great already; and what a beautiful day outside too!

Thank you to the Men for all their work to improve the appearance of the Church, from inside to out!

Grateful and Aware of God's Love

Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!) O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!
- Psalm 106:1

God is always good to us, always faithful to us, always working so diligently in our lives. He is always doing something for us and acting in our best interest, so we need to respond by letting Him know we appreciate His abundant goodness. For example, "Lord, thank You for a good night's sleep," or "God, I thank You that my visit to the dentist didn't hurt as much as I thought it might," or "Father, thank You for helping me make good decisions today," or "Lord, thank You for keeping me encouraged."

We can thank God silently in our hearts, and we can also voice our thankfulness aloud because that helps us stay conscious and aware of God's love, which He demonstrates through His goodness to us. Prayer of Thanks I thank You, Father, that You are always faithful to me. Even when I can't see it, You are working on my behalf because You love me and You have a great plan for my life. Thank You for all the ways You demonstrate that love on a daily basis.
